Western Pa. represented in Grammy nominations

Pittsburgh’s Wiz Khalifa earned nominations for “best rap album” and “best rap song” from the 57th annual Grammy Awards.

Two former Beaver County residents, a Mercer County rocker-turned-composer and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra also will represent the region on “Music’s Biggest Night” Feb. 8.

Grammy nominees with regional ties announced last week:

n Christina Aguilera, formerly of Rochester, for her vocals with A Great Big World on the ballad “Say Something” (Best Pop Duo/Group Performance).

n The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, with saxophonist Ralph Lalama, an Aliquippa native, for its “OverTime: Music of Bob Brookmeyer” (Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album).

n Trent Reznor, a Mercer native, for his collaboration with Atticus Ross on the score for the Ben Affleck thriller “Gone Girl.” (Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media).

n Pittsburgh Symphony and conductor Manfred Honeck for “Dvorak: Symphony No. 8; Janacek: Symphonic Suite From Jenufa” (Best Orchestra Performance). Fellow nominees are the St Louis, Seattle and Atlanta symphonies and the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Khalifa will face some musical heavyweights in the Best Rap Song category for which his “We Dem Boyz” is nominated.

His competition: Nicki Minaj (“Anaconda”), Kanye West (“Bound 2”), Kendrick Lamar (“I”) and Drake (“0 to 100/The Catch Up”).

In the Best Rap Album contest, Khalifa’s “Blacc Hollywood” takes on releases from Iggy Azalea, Childish Gambino, Eminem and Schoolboy Q.
