‘Bullitt’ closes out classic film series
Muscle cars and one of the best car chases in cinema are on the big screen at the State Theatre Center for the Arts for the final film of the Classic Movie Series on Aug. 8.
“Bullitt” (1968), based on Robert L. Pike’s crime novel “Mute Witness” stars Steve McQueen in one of his most famous roles, as tough-guy police detective Frank Bullitt, who is assigned by an ambitious senator, Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn), to a seemingly routine detail, protecting mafia informant Johnny Ross (Pat Renella), who is scheduled to testify against his mob cronies before a Senate subcommittee in San Francisco. But when a pair of hit men ambush their secret location, fatally wounding Ross, Bullitt decides to investigate the case on his own. Unfortunately for him, Chalmers wants to shut his investigation down, hindering Bullitt’s plan to not only bring the killers to justice but discover who leaked the location of the hideout.
The movie series, which is supported by the Herald-Standard, Buy Local Program and the Downtown Business District Association, along with the theater, creates an event around each of the two viewings, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., of the monthly movie.
For the August movie, O’Gillies in Uniontown will be offering a 10 percent discount for regular priced entrees all day, with a movie stub (excludes any alcohol or specials).
Every month during classic film series movies, Buy Local and the Herald-Standard offer a chance to win $100 at each viewing.
During “Bullitt” showings, moviegoers are invited to play “Catch the Bullitt” for a chance to win.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children.
“Bullitt” closes out the 2013-14 classic film series at the theater. Details are forthcoming on the big kick off movie planned for September that will jump start the 2014-15 series.
