Shogun Hibachi offers delicious fare
Located at the Uniontown Mall, the Shogun Hibachi Steakhouse provides customers with more than just authentic Asian cuisine.
“We think the entertainment is the most important part of Hibachi,” said Kevin Zhang, general manager.
The talented Hibachi chefs at Shogun are trained for at least a couple of years in-house before they can do a show on their own.
“They actually know much more than they do, but because it can be very dangerous we keep the show safe,” Zhang said.
Eight to 10 people can sit at a Hibachi table, which is situated around the Hibachi grill.
“Because of the high temperature and the surface material on the Hibachi grill, it creates a very unique taste that you can’t get anywhere else,” Zhang said.
Some of the most popular Hibachi dishes ordered are the filet mignon and shrimp, chicken and steak or any of the lobster combinations. New York strip steak, salmon and scallops can also be ordered, and all can be ordered in different combinations.
Aside from the main entree, all Hibachi dinners include a shrimp appetizer, traditional Japanese soup, a house salad with ginger dressing, mixed vegetables and fried rice or noodles.
A children’s menu is also available for Hibachi dinners.
The skilled chefs prepare the customer’s meals right in front of them on the Hibachi grill. They first light a fire to the heat the grill and then knives start spinning as the chefs begin to cut up meat into bite-size portions.
Zhang said all shows are slightly different depending on each chef, but all chefs are creative and enjoy having fun with their guests by tossing food at them and asking a customer do the honors of lighting an “onion volcano,” which will overflow with “lava” all over the grill.
For those not interested in the show, there is a dining room for customers to enjoy Hibachi meals and other kitchen entrees.
“The kitchen entrees are not all Japanese,” Zhang said. “We feature other Asian cuisines as well, to give the customers more options when they dine with us.”
Aside from the more common General Tso’s chicken, sesame chicken and orange chicken dishes, one of the most popular kitchen entrees is Pad Thai chicken, which features thin, flat rice noodles stir fried with tofu, scallion and egg tossed in a tangy, sweet citrus sauce and is served with peanut and lime.
Customers also enjoy the red curry chicken, which is topped with red peppers, carrots, mushrooms, onions and zucchini in a Thai red curry sauce.
All kitchen entrees are served with house soup, salad and steamed rice.
For sushi lovers, sushi can be served a la carte, in rolls or as dinners, which are served with soup and salad.
Zhang said that aside from the common California, Philadelphia, cucumber and avocado rolls, the most popular rolls are the Spicy Butterfly, the Bay Ridge and the Shogun rolls.
The Shogun roll features shrimp tempura, mango and spicy crab meat, while the Bay Ridge roll includes salmon, asparagus, cream cheese, tempura and is topped with masago.
And possibly the most popular roll, the Spicy Butterfly includes shrimp tempura, asparagus and crabmeat wrapped in a pink soy paper.
The creative chefs are known to dress up their sushi with themes, such as a beach-themed roll topped with little umbrellas, or different shapes such as hearts.
Shogun also offers lunch-sized hibachi meals, sushi, kitchen entrees and Bento Boxes.
The boxes include house soup, salad, a California roll, white rice, gyoza and one of nine main entree options.
Although Zhang guarantees customers will have enough food to take home for lunch the next day, desserts are also available and include fried cheesecake and fried vanilla, strawberry or chocolate ice cream.
Shogun has been located in the Uniontown Mall for the past three years. Zhang said the only future plans he has set so far are to offer snow crab and king crab during the upcoming holiday season.
Shogun Hibachi Steakhouse is located at 1200 Mall Run Road in Uniontown. The restaurant can not be entered from within the mall.
