At the Movies

An animated sequel (“Minions”) and a mysterious fantasy (“Self/less”) are among the titles arriving on this post-Fourth of July weekend.
The films slated to arrive at a theater near you (with all dates highly subject to change and some titles On Demand) include:
“10,000 km,” with Natalia Tena and David Verdaguer in an R-rated romantic comedy drama about a couple — one in Barcelona, the other in Los Angeles — trying to keep their love alive in spite of being many, many miles apart. Carlos Marques-Marcet made his directing debut.
“Amy,” with Yasiin Bey, Mark Ronson and legendary singer Tony Bennett in a critically acclaimed R-rated documentary on the late performer Amy Winehouse who enjoyed a huge hit with the song “Rehab” (2006). Asif Kapadia (“Senna”) directed.
“Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World,” with Teresa Clovicko, Audrey Copper and Eric Johnston in a PG-rated documentary about a 5-year-old boy who dreamed of being the Caped Crusader and the people who came together to grant that wish for a day.
Dana Nachman (“The Human Experiment”) directed the film.
“Boulevard,” with the late Robin Williams, Bob Odenkirk and Kathy Baker in an R-rated drama about a closeted older married man who begins a sexual relationship with a street hustler.
According to theguardian.com, the picture marks the Oscar-winning actor’s final screen role.
Dito Montiel (“Empire State”) directed the film.
“Cartel Land,” with Matthew Heineman directing an R-rated documentary about a doctor in Mexico leading citizens against a drug cartel and a veteran trying to stop drug wars from coming to the United States.
“The Gallows,” with Cassidy Gifford (the daughter of Kathie Lee and Frank Gifford), Pfeifer Brown and Ryan Shoos star in this R-rated chiller about a resurrected play to honor the memories of those who died in an accident two decades ago and how that well-intentioned tribute goes horribly astray. Travis Cluff (“Gold Fools”) and debuting filmmaker Chris Lofing co-directed.
“Minions,” with the voices of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, Geoffrey Rush and Steve Carell in a PG-rated computer-animated prequel in which the yellow capsule-shaped characters must expose a plot for world domination.
Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin, co-creators of “The Lorax” and “Despicable Me 2,” respectively, co-directed.
“Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot,” with Kobe Bryant, Rick Carlisle, Mark Cuban and Michael Finley in an unrated documentary about German basketball player Dirk Nowitzki and the relationship between him and his mentor, Holger Geschwindner.
Sebastian Dehnhardt (“Klitschko”) directed the film.
“Self/less,” with Ryan Reynolds, Ben Kingsley, Matthew Goode, Michelle Dockery, Natalie Martinez and Victor Garber in a PG-13 fantasy about a rich man who suffers from cancer and pays for a medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into a healthy young man. Unexpected negative results occur soon after.
Tarsem Singh (“The Fall”) directed.
“Tangerine,” with Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor and Clu Gulager in an R-rated picture about a Hollywood prostitute searching for a lost love on Christmas Eve. Sean Baker (“Starlet”) directed.
