By Diana Lasko dlasko@heraldstandard.Com 3 min read

Something new this year to the West Virginia Public Theatre is Dragon’s Dream Theatre (DDT). This Children’s Theatre will feature two creative shows performed by our intern staff for young people to enjoy with their families.

WVPT is using Dragon’s Dream Theatre as a way for children to experience the magic and freedom of theatre with performances tailored to their age level. It will feature shorter length productions and provide opportunities for WVPT tour the children’s shows in the region.

“This troupe of young artists, will create and perform engaging, educational, and entertaining original shows for families and younger audiences. The guiding principle of DDT is that magic can happen if you’re young at heart. At Dragon’s Dream Theater we are very much in touch with our inner child and are dedicated to fostering the imagination, curiosity, and hearts of every child-and adult-that experiences our shows. It is our mission to equip our audiences with the creativity and zest for life that is necessary to face the world,” WVPT Executive Director Larry Mabrey said in a press release.

The two upcoming children’s shows are:

“A Rocktastic Funkadelic,” 11 a.m. July 11 and 12 at Lyell B. Clay Concert Theater at WVU.

The story follows cousins Hep Cat and Greazzy Cat who have nothing in common and are tired of family reunions. This year, they try to make a go of being friends and discover they both love music. The only problem is that Hep Cat jives to funk while Greazzy Cat loves rock n’ roll. Through the power of music, they learn to put their differences aside and become best friends.

“Foodie and the Beast” will be on stage at the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theater for two shows 11 a.m. July 24 and 25.

Life in the town of Colmar is idyllic but trouble starts to brew when a new guy named Adam moves in down the street. Adam is a little too hairy for the townspeople of Colmar, and they work tirelessly to force Adam out of his house. Bellanie, a quiet and understanding girl, tries her best to see things from Adam’s point of view. Bellanie must try to convice the townspeople that Adam is not a bad guy. What will the townspeople do if they are proven wrong about Adam?

Tickets for Dragon’s Dream Theatre are $7 for children 15 and under and $10 for anyone 16 years and older and may be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets. There is no reserved seating for DDT performances. DDT will also be available to tour to summer camps, summer schools, and other organizations in the region.
