“Miss Fisher’s” Sluthing Now On Blu-Ray
“Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries,” an Australian television series, beckons the audience to return to a time when jazz clubs were the cat’s pajamas and the height of fashion was bob haircuts and flapper dresses.
The series 1-3 collection is now available on Blu-ray and is based on the novels by Kerry Greenwood. They feature the female heroine Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis, “The Babodook” and “The Matrix Reloaded”) as a female detective with a sharp wit and a pearl-handled pistol that takes to unconventional methods to catch her crook.
Alongside her is Detective John “Jack” Robinson (Nathan Page, “Sleeping Beauty” and “The Boys Are Back”) who is a by the books detective that tries to reign in Miss Fisher, usually unsuccessfully.
Denofgeek.com refers to her as “The Feminist Sherlock Holmes” and Toni Ruberto of Buffalo.com, wrote the piece “You Should Be Watching: ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.'”
She writes, “Somewhere between Nancy Drew and Jessica Fletcher is Phryne Fisher, a woman of impeccable taste with a nose for murder.
“With her trademark bob, bright red lipstick and outstanding fashion sense, she’s hard to miss – and resist.
This female James Bond knows how to defend herself (note the gold, pearl-handled gun in the garter) and she’s skilled in the art of seduction. (Single by choice, her true affection is for the long-suffering Detective Inspector Jack Robinson).
“The mysteries are interesting, Davis is loads of fun as Phryne and the 1920s costumes are so stunningly impeccable they are the focus of a new exhibit in Australia.”
