New to Theaters: Swinging back into action: New Spider-Man film resets the universe

Spider-Man, the web-slinging superhero, will swing back into theaters as “Spider-Man Homecoming” arrives this week.
In this latest installment of the Spider-man franchise, which occurs right after the events of the 2016 film “Captain America: Civil War,” Peter Parker (Tom Holland, “The Impossible” and “Locke”) is trying to get back to his normal life as a high school student while trying to balance his heroic alter-ego.
But, normal has a new meaning when Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” and “Tropic Thunder”) is your mentor and a new villain named Vulture (Michael Keaton, “Batman” and “Spotlight”) continues to threaten the city.
“Spider-Man Homecoming” reboots the franchise in order to place this character in the Marvel universe with other favorite super heroes such as the aforementioned Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the rest of the Avengers.
This new rebooting has allowed for the cast of characters to be more diverse and inclusive of more minorities.
Christopher Luu of the website Refinery29, wrote in his article that during a panel discussion Amy Pascal, a producer for the film said that the reason for this is because it is more realistic and this is what happens in life.
“I would say the inspiration for it was reality,” she said during the panel according to Luu.
Tony Revolori, who plays Flash Thompson, said that even the feeling among the cast and crew was different than on other films he has been a part of.
“It’s wonderful,” he said of the casting decisions according to Luu. “When you see the film, there’s not a single line of exposition as to explain why I look the way I look, and I think that’s wonderful. That I just am in the movie; it’s not about a certain race, it’s not about doing anything. I think that’s the diversity we need in Hollywood now.”
There is good news for Spider-man fans.
During a Facebook interview with the French media outlet AlloCiné, Holland let it slip that “Homecoming” will be the first of three new Spider-Man films that will be set in this new universe.
Currently the sequel is set to hit theaters July 5, 2019.
“Spider-Man Homecoming” is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence, some language and brief suggestive comments.
Other films coming to theaters this weekend include:
