In 1933, audiences were introduced to the wraith of the giant ape named King Kong.

Since then Kong has escaped, had a son and even battled Godzilla in over 10 different film spin offs.

The latest installment in the Kong universe, “Kong: Skull Island” hits theaters this weekend.

A group of explorers including James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston, “The Avengers” and “The Night Manager”) and Mason Weaver (Brie Larson, “Room” and “21 Jump Street”) are lead on an expedition to a remote island by Bill Randa (John Goodman “Roseanne” and “The Big Lebowski”).

The crew are transported to the island by helicopter pilot, Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson, “Pulp Fiction” and “The Hateful Eight”) where they discover they are in for much more than they bargained for.

Larson, who plays an anti-war photographer, said she was proud to play the role of a journalist in the film, according to a DailyMail.com article.

“I believe we learn from what we see in our leaders. I’m proud to play Mason Waver in @kongskullislandmovie because she represents the many journalists who risk their lives everyday to share with us the truth,” she wrote on her Instagram account.

“Kong: Skull Island” will not be the only new film to feature the gargantuan, mythical ape.

In 2020, Kong is slated to battle another famous mythical creature, Godzilla, but not before the giant lizard has it’s sequel to the 2014 “Godzilla” movie.

“Kong: Skull Island” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for brief strong language.

Other films coming to theaters this weekend include:

n “Personal Shopper” starring Kristen Stewart, Lars Eidinger and Sigrid Bouaziz and directed by Olivier Assayas in a spooky story that happens in the underground world of fashion in Paris.

The film is rated R for some language, sexuality, nudity and a bloody violent image.

n “My Scientology Movie” starring Louis Theroux, Rob Alter and Tom Cruise and directed by John Dower in this documentary about an investigation that goes behind the scenes of the Church of Scientology.

This film is not rated.

n “Brimstone” starring Dakota Fanning, Kit Harington and Carice van Houten and directed by Martin Koolhoven in this western thriller about a pioneer woman who is dealing with a twisted, zealot preacher.

The film is rated R for brutal bloody violence, strong sexual content including disturbing behavior, graphic nudity and language.
