The works of Tennessee Williams are returning to stage as the Actors and Artists of Fayette County present “A Streetcar Named Desire” this weekend.

The show opens tonight at 7:30, followed by performances Friday and Saturday at the same time, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

“This is the first time in a long time that we’ve done a drama to this magnitude,” said Marilyn Forbes, president of AAFC.

The acting group isn’t new to Tennessee Williams’ works, though, as they presented “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” several years ago.

Forbes said it went over well, and was well received.

“It’s a fun challenge for the theater to do another drama,” she added. It took several years to work the show into their schedule, but she said they’re now excited to present it.

“A Streetcar Named Desire” follows three main characters and the relationships, stories, rumors and tumultuous endings among them.

Stella (Rachel Carey of Mars, Butler County) welcomes her sister Blanche (Meg Baker of Morgantown, West Virginia) into her home with her husband Stanley (Josh Schaefer of Scottdale). A mutual dislike between Stanley and Blanche creates friction as the drama escalates to an unexpected ending.

Forbes said she hopes those in attendance take away the message that “Tennessee wants to give us.”

“There’s a little desperation in all of us, and sometimes things aren’t as black and white as you want them to be,” she added.

The last time a Williams’ production was presented, Forbes said the general audience feedback revealed “amazement” and called the show Broadway-worthy. She added that they’re confident they can deliver that caliber again.
