Denzel Washington returns as Robert McCall in "The Equalizer 2," set to release this weekend.

More than four years after the release of “The Equalizer,” Denzel Washington will reprise his role as Robert McCall when “The Equalizer 2” hits theaters this weekend.

A sequel wasn’t a surprise, being that it was announced that one was in the plans seven months before the release of the first film in February of 2014. What is a little surprising, however, is that after over 55 film and television credits, this will be Washington’s first sequel.

McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed so how far will he go when he learns that one of his long-time friends, Susan Plummer (Melissa Leo, “The Fighter” and “Frozen River”), has been murdered.

He decides to return to his old ways and seek out, find and punish the perpetrators.

Washington, Leo and Bill Pullman, who plays the husband of Susan Plummer, are the only actors from the original to appear in the sequel.

In May, BoxOffice Magazine projected the film to gross $15 to $25 million in its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, and a final total of around $60 million.

The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua. This is the first time Fuqua directed a sequel to one of his own movies. It is not rated.

On the website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a user rating of 98 percent.

Other movies to hit the box office this weekend include:

n “Mama Mia! Here We Go Again,” starring Lily James, Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Colin Firth, and directed by Ol Parker, brings back the previous cast and more for this sequel that goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.

This film is rated PG-13 for some suggestive material.

n “Blindspotting,” starring Daveed Diggs, Rafael Casal, Janina Gavankar and Jasmine Cephas Jones, and directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, follows Collin (Diggs) who must make it through his final three days of probation for a chance at a new beginning. He and his trouble-making childhood best friend, Miles (Casal), work as movers, and when Collin witnesses a police shooting, the two men’s friendship is tested as they grapple with identity and their changed realities in the rapidly-gentrifying neighborhood they grew up in.

This film is rated R for language, some brutal violence, sexual references and drug use.

n “McQueen,” directed by Ian Bonhote, is a documentary following the life of designer Alexander McQueen. It will give audiences a personal look at the extraordinary life, career and artistry of McQueen through exclusive interviews with his closest friends and family, recovered archives, visuals and music. The film is “an authentic celebration and thrilling portrait of an inspired yet tortured fashion visionary,” according to the production company.

The film is not rated.
