Theatergoers looking for a drama that will pull them in this week, should check out “Adrift,” based on a true story about a couple lost at sea.

Adapted from the book Tami Oldham titled “Red Sky in Mourning: The True Story of Love, Loss and Survival at Sea,” this drama stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as a young couple who set sail across the ocean together but find themselves marooned at sea after an unexpected encounter with a powerful hurricane.

In the aftermath of the storm, Tami (Woodley, “Big Little Lies” and “The Fault in Our Stars”) awakens to find Richard (Claflin, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “Me Before You”) badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.

Over 90 percent of the movie was filmed at sea beginning some days at 4 a.m. with a two-hour boat ride from land and a daily shoot lasting up to 12 hours on water with no land in sight.

The IMDb website said Woodley revealed there were times on the open sea when, except for the director and cinematographer, everybody was throwing up overboard due to severe seasickness.

While there were not critic reviews yet on Rotten Tomatoes or metacritic.com, the user rating on the website shows 91 percent of users want to see the movie.

Directed by Baltasar Kormakur, this film is rated PG-13 for injury images, peril, language, brief drug use, partial nudity and thematic elements.

Other movies making their way to the theater this weekend include:

n “Action Point,” starring Johnny Knoxville, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Johnny Pemberton and Susan Yeagley, and directed by Tim Kirkby, is an action comedy where Knoxville plays the crackpot owner of Action Point, a low-rent, out-of-control amusement park where the rides are designed with minimum safety for maximum fun.

This film is rated R for crude sexual content, language, drug use, teen drinking and brief nudity.

n “A Kid Like Jake,” stars Priyanka Chopra, Ann Dowd, Claire Danes and Shaunette Renee Wilson, and directed by Silas Howard. The storyline follows a Brooklyn couple who has always known that their 4-year-old son is more interested in fairy tale princesses than toy cars. But when his preschool director points out that his gender-nonconforming play may be more than a phase, the couple is forced to rethink their roles as parents and spouses.

This film is not yet rated.

n “American Animals,” is a crime drama starring Evan Peters, Ann Dowd and Barry Keoghan, and directed by Bart Layton. Childhood friends Spencer and Warren rebel against their suburban upbringing. They and two fellow students plot to steal priceless Audobon prints and rare books from Transylvania University’s special collections library.

This film is rated R.
