The wagon train is a mainstay of the National Road Festival, which is coming up this weekend.

It’s been billed as the “world’s largest festival,” and it will stretch through Somerset, Washington and Fayette counties this weekend.

The National Road Festival will get underway Saturday with activities planned in Scenery Hill, Claysville, Brownsville, Hopwood and other locations. Throughout the 90 miles of the festival, there will be vendors selling arts and crafts, live music, reenactors, and more.

An annual part of the festival, a wagon train will travel down Route 40, just as early settlers did when it was the first federal road built in the United States between 1811 and 1837.

Other highlights will include a mullet contest and Kids Fest in Claysville on Saturday, Civil War reenactments at Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville, performances by the Pittsburgh Square Dancers and the Mon Valley Academy for the Arts fife and drum unit in Scenery Hill and more.
