As a new year comes rolling in, Van Morrison is celebrating with nothing but an upbeat attitude. “Accentuate the Positive” is the 78-year-old singer-songwriter’s 45th studio release that pays tribute to infectious rock ‘n’ roll standards from legendary artists like Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

As an artist of many styles, Morrison sounds inspired and refreshed while reinventing these classics with his signature sound that adds delightful touches of soulful sophistication to the sprawling 19-song set.

Morrison’s latest effort comes only eight months after the release of his interpretations of various folk, country and blues arrangements on “Moving on Skiffle.”

Morrison’s smooth voice effortlessly navigates familiar numbers like “The Shape I’m In,” “A Shot of Rhythm and Blues,” “Shakin’ All Over” and “Blueberry Hill.”

The album opens with “You Are My Sunshine” and continuously rolls out the good vibes until the closing notes of “Shake, Rattle and Roll” are played.

Morrison infuses a certain carefree coolness to the title track. First featured in 1944’s “Here Come the Waves” with Bing Crosby and Betty Hutton, the song is a reassuring reminder to spread joy to the maximum and bring gloom down to the minimum. Sounds like a pretty good resolution to follow in 2024.

For me, highlights of the album come during the spirited performances featuring the late Jeff Beck on guitar during “Lonesome Train” and a guest performance on “Lucille” by Taj Mahal.

Whether he is meticulously performing Chuck Willis’ “Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes,” Don Gibson’s “Sea of Heartbreak” or Bill Haley and His Comets’ “Two Hound Dogs,” Morrison demonstrates a musical mastery that has thrilled audiences for nearly 60 years.

Absorbing the energy of “Accentuate the Positive” is a satisfying way to set a nostalgic mood during those long winter nights ahead.
