The Fayette County Law Library’s October 2012 artist of the month is Ed Cope, retired chief photographer for the Herald Standard newspaper.

With an impressive career spanning more than four decades, Cope received many accolades for his work, including awards for a photo of fire rescue in Connellsville that earned five first-place spot news awards in local and state photo contests and national third-place recognition from the National Press Photographers Association. That photo was chosen as one of the top 600 photos for the century in 2000 by the Associated Press.

Cope’s other achievements included being named a 2007 finalist in the Golden Quill competition in Pittsburgh and receiving a third-place award from the state Society of Professional Journalists for photo titled “In Memory of a Marine.” Additionally, he won second place for Sports Action for an action baseball photograph in the Pennsylvania APME Photo Contest in 2008.

The son of Matilda Sirianni Cope of Pennsville and the late Donald A. Cope, he is married to Susan Bugash and has two children and one grandchild.

Cope’s photos are displayed in the law library on the second floor of the Fayette County Courthouse. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
