Music Program’s spring concert to showcase talent of 100 students
The Department of Fine Arts and the Waynesburg University Music Program will present its annual spring concert Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10 at 7:30?p.m. each evening.
The event will be held in the Goodwin Performing Arts Center. Admission is free, reservations are suggested and the public is cordially invited to attend.
?The music program, featuring the university’s Symphonic Band and Lamplighter Concert Choir, will present several 20th century neoclassical works.
The 50-member symphonic band, under the direction of Ronda DePriest, assistant professor of instrumental music and director of the Music Program at Waynesburg University, will present transcriptions of works originally written for orchestra, including Charles Gounod’s “Funeral March of The Marionette,” a piece made popular by the “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” television series, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis,” and Pavel Tschesnokoff’s “Salvation is Created.”
Other pieces include original works for wind band by Alfred Reed, Charles Rochester Young, and John Williams.
The Lamplighters will perform under the direction of Melanie Catana, instructor of music and director of vocal music at Waynesburg University.
The choir will devote the first half of its performance to selections including “Sure on this Shining Night” by Samuel Barber, “Sing a Mighty Song” by Daniel Gawthrop, “Jubilate Deo” by Allen Pote, “I Can Tell the World” by Moses Hogan, “Stand Up and Bless the Lord” by John Peterson and “Love Has Come,” as performed by the contemporary Christian artist Matthew West.
During the second half of its performance, the 50-member choir will showcase Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia,” Maurice Durufle’s “Ubi Caritas,” a work titled “This Joyful Eastertide” and a piece by Gustav Holst.
