West Greene track competes in event
The West Greene track and field team participated in the 2011 Pepsi-Tweedlie Invitational meet hosted by John Marshall on April 1. Other high school teams competing were Wheeling Park, Hampshire, John Marshall, Parkersburg South, Parkersburg, Brooke, Weir, Bishop Donahue and Clay Battelle. The following West Greene athletes placed (finished in the top six) in the competition.
?West Greene girls team: Mikayla Sonneborn, 2:35.5 (third in 800 meters); 1,600 meter relay team of Jessica Black, Emily Courtwright, Rebecca Phillips, Mikayla Sonneborn, 4:37.60 (fifth and school record); Veronica Kline 87 feet, 1 inch (third in the discus), and Shuttle Hurdle, 1:23.12 (sixth in the 4×100 meter).
West Greene boys team: Chris Wise, 25.05 (sixth in the 200 meter dash); Patrick Shuckhart 5 feet, 6 inches (sixth in the high jump), and Dakota Usher 39 feet, 7 inches (sixth in the shot put).
Boys track
Brownsville 84, West Greene 41 – The Brownsville boys track & field team continued its strong start to the 2011 season Tuesday afternoon with a Section 6-AA victory over West Greene at Waynesburg Central’s track facility.
Brownsville improves to 3-0 in the section as well as overall.
The Falcons’ Markie Johnson had a great individual effort by sweeping the sprints. He won the 100 in 11.7 seconds, the 200 in 24.2, and the 400 in 57.8.
Anthony Toulson won two individual events, the 1,600 in 5:43 and 3,200 in 12:33, and joined Josh Lawver, Wade Strickler and James Hogan to win the 3,200 relay in 10:30.
Zach Landman (shot put, 42-5 1/2) Matt Karol (long jump, 18-6), Brandon Myrga (triple jump, 36-9), Nicholas Despot (110 high hurdles, 21.59), and Derek Jones (300 intermediate hurdles, 57.2) all finished first for Brownsville.
Dakota Usher (discus, 110-8), Patrick Shuckhart (high jump, 5-4), and Cordel Bowman (800, 2:24) all secured first-place finishes for the Pioneers. West Greene’s 400 relay team of Danton Walker, Bryan McCartney, Chris Wise and Seth Courtwright finished first in 48.29 seconds and the 1,600 relay in 4:04.
Against the Cougars, Wise won the 100 (11.8) and 200 (24.3), Courtwright won the triple jump (33-3), and Usher finished first in the shot put (39-9).
Men’s tennis
Frostburg State (Md.) 8, Waynesburg 0 – The Bobcats dropped only one set to the visiting Yellow Jackets for a non-conference road victory. The final singles match of the day was called off because of snow.
Girls track
West Greene 88, Brownsville 43; West Greene 80, Charleroi 47 – Mikayla Sonneborn and Jessica Black led the Lady Pioneers on the track, and teammate Veronica Klein controlled the throws for a Section 6-AA win over the Falcons at Waynesburg Central’s track facility. It is believed to be West Greene’s first ever 2-0 start in girls track.
Sonneborn won the 800 (2:48) and 1,600 (6:01), and Black finished first in the 100 (14.2) and 200 (29.7). Klein beat the field in the shot put (28-9) and discus (84-8).
Michelle Mathason (long jump, 13-4), Brittany Reed (400, 1:17), Anna Salai (3,200, 14:42) and Cathy Mason (100 high hurdles, 18.5) all finished first for the Lady Pioneers.
West Greene’s 1,600 relay of Black, Emily Courtwright, Rebecca Phillips and Sonneborn won in 4:40 and 3,200 relay quartet of Savanna Hennen, Reed, Salai and Courtwright finished first in 12:14.
Whitney Ptak had a strong performance for Brownsville, winning the high jump (4-4) and 300 intermediate hurdles (56.9), and anchored Charlie Geisel, Chelsea Ulery and Sirena Leon to a first-place finish in the 400 relay in 55.9 seconds.
Softball
Carmichaels 12, Albert Gallatin 8 – The Lady Colonials scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game, but Carmichaels plated four runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 12-8 victory in a non-section softball game at Albert Gallatin.
The Lady Mikes scored two runs in the top of the first inning, and then held leads of 5-3 in the fourth, 7-3 in the fifth, and 8-3 in the top of the sixth.
Albert Gallatin rallied for a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second before tying the game in bottom of the sixth.
Carmichaels used a lead-off walk, a double by Erica Britner, and two singles, coupled with passed balls, with one out to score four runs in the top of the eighth.
Brittni Krajnak, Megan Bayles, Lindsey Osborne and Cameron Grimes all doubled for Carmichaels. Grimes earned the win despite allowing 18 hits, striking out five and walking one.
Chealsie Shaffer had a double and triple, and Marisa Wallace and Katie Volek doubled for the Lady Colonials. Shienna Ross took the loss, allowing 18 hits while striking out 10 and walking 12.
Frazier 10, West Greene 1 – The Frazier softball team won its first game with a 10-1 effort on the road against West Greene.
The Lady Commodores took advantage of five Lady Pioneers’ errors in the first inning to post a 5-0 lead.
Andrea Lash earned the win with nine strikeouts while allowing one walk.
Alexis Livingstone, Kesley Dillon and Brittany Strothers each had doubles for the Lady Commodores.
Paige Moninger struck out eight batters while giving up three walks.
Macy McMillan went 2-3 for the Lady Pioneers.
