Monica, Raiders ‘strike down’ Frazier
PERRYOPOLIS — Waynesburg Central’s Joe Monica struck out the first eight batters, as the Raiders defeated Frazier 9-3 in Section 2-AA action.
“He came out and put it to us today,” said Frazier coach Joseph Scalise. “He was hitting his spots and we just weren’t able to hit him.”
Waynesburg Central jumped out to an early lead as Steve McCaw hit a three-run shot over the left-center field fence. Monica and the Raiders never looked back.
Monica and Rick Kalsey added RBIs in the fourth and Alex Swauger hit a two-run homer in the fifth to stretch the Raiders’ lead to 7-0.
Monica allowed one unearned run on one hit to go with 11 strikeouts in five innings of work.
Frazier third baseman Zach Smalich broke up the perfect game with a fifth-inning single and represented Frazier’s first run when he scored on an RBI from Casey Henry.
“Joe threw a great game for us, but he got a little tired out there,” said Raiders’ coach Steve Coss. “When you don’t play for a couple weeks your arm can get tired, but fortunately we have guys who can come in and finish the job.”
Derek Lohr and Swauger finished out the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, for the Raiders.
Smalich added two RBIs in the sixth, but it was too little too late for the Commodores, as Waynesburg Central scored two more runs in the seventh to seal a road win.
“This team is on a mission right now and we are going to be hard for anyone to beat if we continue to play our game,” said Coss.
