Cumberland Township supervisors announce pipeline survey

By Cumberland Township Supervisors Announce Pipeline Survey 2 min read

CUMBERLAND TWP. — Cumberland Township supervisors on Monday said residents should expect to be contacted by a company doing a survey for a gas pipeline.

William Groves, chairman of the board of supervisors, read a letter from Transco stating it would be conducting the survey for Williams of Houston, Texas, for a proposed 235-mile pipeline running from the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border through Greene and Fayette counties to Transco’s compressor station in Delta, York County.

The letter states that Transco conducted a feasibility study for the line in 2007 and 2008, but the project was shelved so gas transportation needs in the area could be better assessed.

In re-initiating the field study, Transco said it would contact property owners in a wide corridor to get permission to survey land and much of the proposed route would follow existing utility corridors, according to the letter.

If the project moves forward, the company plans to ask the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to initiate a pre-environmental review this fall, the letter states.

In an unrelated matter, the supervisors agreed to develop a policy or resolution banning smoking at the playground area in the 30-acre township park to take part in the “Young Lungs at Play” program administered by the Penn State Extension and funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

The township will receive “Young Lungs at Play” signs to post around the playground area where the youngest children play, said Betty Anderson of the Penn State Extension.

In other business, the supervisors:

n Authorized community development administrator Marcia Sonneborn to receive and open bids for the Nemacolin Volunteer Fire Department parking lot paving project.

n Increased employee mileage reimbursement to 55.5 cents per mile from 51 cents.

n Agreed to buy a computer program for the tax collector for $899. The Carmichaels Area School District will pay a share of the cost.
