Fourteen young ladies to compete for annual Coal Queen crown
CARMICHAELS — Fourteen young women are competing for the title of coal queen in this year’s Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Queen Pageant.
?The 58th annual competition will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Stan Ferek Auditorium at Carmichaels Area High School, with the doors opening at 6 p.m. The admission cost is $8.
Candidates are selected for the competition by their respective high schools, and must be a senior at their school this fall. The winner Sunday will replace reigning Coal Queen Annie Caccimielio, a daughter of James and Susan Caccimelio of Chalk Hill. Caccimielio is a graduate of Geibel Catholic High School in Connellsville.
Three independent judges from outside the area who are professionals in the fields of music, voice and/or dance will judge candidates based on talent, poise and a private interview question presented to them.
At the end of the evening, awards are presented for top scores in the categories of interview, talent and evening gown. Special awards also are given to the contestant who raises the most bond money and the contestant that is voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow participants.
The evening culminates with the naming of the first, second, third and fourth runners-up and finally the new coal queen.
State Sen. Tim Solobay, D-Eighty Four, will crown the queen.
The 2011 candidates are, in alphabetical order:
n Victoria Buchtan, a daughter of Albert and Vanessa Buchtan of Carmichaels, will represent Carmichaels Area High School. She will be singing “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from the Broadway musical “Gypsy.” Buchtan is a member of the concert and marching bands, chorus, drama club, Big Brothers Big Sisters and National Honor Society.
n Sadie Caccimelio, a daughter of James and Susan Caccimelio of Chalk Hill, will represent Geibel Catholic High School. She will be singing “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from the Broadway musical, “Funny Girl.” Caccimelio is a member of the pep band, chamber ensemble, Gator Entertainers, cheerleading squad, Spanish Honor Society and National Honor Society.
n Macey Demniak, a daughter of Dave and Mary Demniak of Smithfield, will represent Albert Gallatin High School. She will be singing “Anyway,” by Martina McBride. Demniak is a member of the student council, chorus, choir, prayer and Bible Club and the Young Astronauts Club.
n Elle Eutsey, a daughter of George and Heidi Eutsey, will represent Connellsville Area High School. She will be dancing to “Heartburn,” by Alicia Keys. Eutsey is a member of the varsity cheerleading squad, student council, Connellsville Patriots, chamber ensemble, International Honor Society of Thespians and National Honor Society.
n Kristi Guritza, a daughter of Michael and Sandra Guritza of Greensboro, will represent Mapletown High School. Guritza will play a violin selection of “Millionaires Hoedown” and “Orange Blossom Special” for her talent. She is a member of the varsity basketball and volleyball teams, the Future is Mine Club, yearbook staff and the Greenhouse Club.
n Natalie Lasko, a daughter of Gary and Mary Lasko of Star Junction, will represent Frazier High School. Lasko will be performing a baton-twirling routine to “Proud Mary,” in the style of “Glee.” She is a member of the marching band, ecology club, track and field team, Health Careers Club and cross country team and serves as the head majorette.
n Breanna Marie Lincoski, a daughter of Ronald and Jan Lincoski, will represent California Area High School. Lincoski will perform a jazz routine to “I’m a Good Girl,” by Christina Aguilera. She is a member of the marching band, concert band, Leo Club, SADD, Envirothon team, National Honor Society and the Future is Mine Club.
n Haley Suzanne Lipscomb, a daughter of John and Ramonda Lipscomb of Waynesburg, will represent Waynesburg Central High School. Lipscomb will perform a dance to “Don’t Tell Mama,” from the Broadway musical “Cabaret.” She is a member of the varsity soccer team, Academic League, the Future is Mine Club, debate team, Russian Club, Alpha Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society.
n Skyler Matthews, a daughter of Shelly Thomas of Uniontown, will represent Uniontown Area High School. Matthews will perform a dance to “Let it Be,” by the Beatles. She has received the Young Junior Tap Dancer of the Year award, Junior Student of the Year award, Junior Jazz Dancer of the Year award, Senior Ballet Dancer of the Year award and Lanzi Academy of Dance Scholarship.
n Samantha Nuccetelli, a daughter of James and Michelle Nuccetelli of Fredericktown, will represent Bethlehem-Center High School. Nuccetelli will be performing a tap dance to “Evacuate the Dance Floor,” by Casacada. She is a member of Leo Club, Youth Traffic Safety Council, choir, Make-A-Wish Club and vice president of student council.
n Kourtney Polvinale, a daughter of David and Candace Polivnale of Brownsville, will represent Brownsville Area High School. Polvinale will be performing a dance to “Hot Honey Rag,” from the Broadway musical “Chicago.” She is a member of Tri-Hi-Y, debate team, Academic League, French National Honor Society, student council, choir, Thespian Society and National Honor Society.
n Marissa Rollison, a daughter of Stacey and Ron Mason of Mather, will represent Jefferson-Morgan High School. Rollison will perform a dance number. She is a member of the track team, Varsity Club, cheerleading squad as captain, Art Club, Drama Club and Foreign Language Club.
n Mikayla Sonneborn, a daughter of Rick and Marcia Sonneborn of West Finley, will represent West Greene High School. Sonneborn will perform an acro-character dance to “Show Off,” from the Broadway musical “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Sonneborn is a member of Women and Girls Foundation, band, chorus, track team, Quiz Bowl team, Home Town High Q team, Chemistry Club, yearbook staff and an independent cross country competitor.
n Alexis Zawelensky, a daughter of Kathy and John Zawelensky of Uniontown, will represent Laurel Highlands High School. Zawelensky will perform a vocal selection. She is a member of the gifted program, junior achievement, student government, Math Club, Spanish Club, SADD, Interact Club, National Honor Society, chamber choir, and track and cross country teams.
