Men arrested on burglary related charges
Two men were arrested and jailed after state police caught them in the process of burglarizing a Greene County house thanks to a tip from a person who noticed suspicious activity occurring at the house.
Sgt. Kevin Kolson, station commander of the state police barracks in Waynesburg, said police caught Eric John Huston, 37, of West Finley and Michael David Jones, 37, of West Alexander burglarizing the house during the early morning hours on Aug. 14.
Kolson said Trooper Duane Spangler, assisted by troopers Brian Siege and Chris Babirad, received a report of a burglary in process at a residence on Booth School Road in Morris Township at 12:04 a.m.
An area resident called police after driving past the house and noticing lights on in the vacant home and a suspicious van parked in the driveway.
Kolson said police witnessed both Huston and Jones arrived on scene and witnessed the men loading items from the house into their van.
Both men were taken into custody without incident, Kolson said.
Huston and Jones were each arraigned on burglary-related charges and placed in the Greene County Prison after failing to post respective $2,500 straight cash bonds.
Huston and Jones will have preliminary hearings at a later date.
Woman charged with assault
State police said a Mt. Morris woman was arrested and jailed following an altercation at a business in Mt. Morris at 11:55 p.m. Aug. 19.
Police said Mary Mertes, age not listed, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, prohibited offensive weapon, harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
According to reports, Mertes was involved in an altercation with Natalie Grim of Bobtown and James Yoney of Mt. Morris when Mertes allegedly grabbed Grim by her hair and choked her. Yoney attempted to break up the fight and Mertes stabbed him in the leg and cut his hand with a knife, police said.
Mertes was in possession of a switchblade knife when she was arrested, police said.
She was arraigned beoifre Magisterial District Judge Lee Watson was placed in Greene County Jail after failing to post $75,000 bail.
Mailbox damaged
State police said sometime between 5 a.m. and 12 p.m. Aug. 15 someone damaged a mailbox belonging to Melanie Miller in front of her residence on Main St. in Rices Landing. Damage was estimated at $30, police said.
Theft reported
State police said 200 feet of welding leads were taken from the vehicle of Tommie Glenn Newsom, 62, of Anson, Texas, while it was parked at the Holiday Motel in Franklin Twp. sometime between 7 p.m. Aug. 17 and 5 a.m. Aug. 18.
