Elizabeth A. (Betty) Walker, 91, of Waynesburg, died Friday, July 15, 2011, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.

She was born June 2, 1920, in Altoona, a daughter of the late William Calvin Walker and Mary Viola Schuster.

Ms. Walker was a graduate of Altoona High School and moved to Greene County in the early 1940s.

She was a pool manager and instructor with the Greene County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Waynesburg Pool for many years and later at the Central Greene School District swimming pool.

Her passion in life was to teach people how to swim and to respect the water. She had done survival and swimming instructional movies for the U.S. Department of the Navy during World War II.

Ms. Walker was an avid reader and had a fond affection for animals.

She was an American Red Cross instructor and volunteer since 1938 and was sponsored by them at National Aquatic School in Chautauqua, N.Y.

Surviving are two nieces. She also leaves a dear friend and caregiver, Susan Williams Stoy of Mars.

Deceased are a sister, Jean Webster, and her longtime companion, Mary E. Collins.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Greene County Humane Society.
