Skin screening to be offered at fair

2 min read

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. It accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. More than two million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are found in this country each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, accounted for about 68,130 cases of skin cancer and 11,790 deaths due to skin cancer each year.

Skin cancer can be found early, and both doctors and patients play important roles in finding skin cancer.

In conjunction with the Greene County Fair Senior Day, the Greene County Cancer Coalition will sponsor a free skin screening on Thursday, Aug. 11 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Greene County Fairgrounds near the 4-H youth Building. Participants are encouraged to schedule appointments in advance by calling the Health Department at 724-627-3168. Appointments are not required and walk-ins are welcome.

“Incidences of skin cancer in Greene County continue to rise,” said Carolyn Wissenbach, Greene County Family Living Educator. “If you have a suspicious mole or reddish, scaly, slightly raised patch of skin here is your chance to get screened. We know that early detection can save lives.

“This is a great opportunity for the local residents since we have no dermatologists in Greene County,” she added. “Dr. English’s office is donating their services to bring this opportunity to our seniors and Greene County residents.”

Penn State encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. Those who anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided should contact the extension office at 724-627-3745 in advance of their participation or visit.
