School districts announce graduation ceremonies

The Messenger recently obtained information regarding the upcoming ceremonies for students graduating in the Class of 2011 at all five Greene County school districts. This week, we preview ceremonies for Waynesburg Central and West Greene high schools.

?Waynesburg Central High School

The Waynesburg Central High School graduation ceremony will be held on June 3 at 7?p.m. in the high school auditorium. A total of 150 students are expected to graduate.

The President’s Address will be given by Gary Kisner, nephew of Steven and Mary Hollingworth of Waynesburg. Dr. Jerome Bartley will also address the senior class.

Baccalaureate was held on Thursday, June 2 at 7?p.m. in the high school auditorium.

The following students have earned the honor of Summa Cum Laude graduate:

Shelby Block, daughter of Stan Block and Sandra Block of Waynesburg. Shelby will be attending Stetson University in Florida and double majoring in business and communications with plans to attend law school in the future.

Jonathan Calvert, son of Gerald and Carol Calvert of Waynesburg. Jonathan will be attending the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a degree in engineering.

Hannah Latzo, daughter of Patricia and Steven Latzo of Waynesburg. Hannah will be attending Coastal Carolina University for an undergraduate degree in marine science.

Breanna Morris, daughter of Shelley and Charles Morris of Waynesburg. Breanna will be attending California University of PA to major in business and economics with a minor in environmental science. Breanna also plans to be a member of the Vulcan softball team.

Bethany and Brittany Orndoff, twin daughters of Scott and Beverly Orndoff of Waynesburg. They will be attending Waynesburg University. Bethany will major in mathematics and secondary education. Brittany is undecided in her major. Both girls will be members of the Yellow Jackets softball team.

Cassandra Orndorff, daughter of Christy and Corbly Orndorff of Waynesburg. Cassie will be attending West Virginia University, where she will be part of the Honors College and major in biochemistry through the Davis College of Agriculture.

West Greene High School

The West Greene High School will hold 2011 commencement exercises at 7?p.m. on Friday, June 3 at the middle/senior high school’s Kennedy Field.

A total of 70 seniors, including three foreign exchange students, will be graduating during the ceremony.

Class Valedictorian is Jacob Douglas Salai. His honors and accolades include receiving the Rose Hulman Merit Scholarship for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and the Rensselaer Leadership Award for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

During his scholastic years, he was involved with the marching, concert and jazz bands, National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl Team, Mock Trial Team and Chemistry Club.

Following graduation, he plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in mechanical engineering.

Class Salutatorian is Cathy Anna Mason. She was involved in a number of organizations, sports and clubs while a student, including basketball, volleyball, track and field Spanish Club, Varsity Club, National Honor Society, Student Senate and Senior Planning Committee, and was secretary of the senior class.

She is also a member of Army Reserves.

After graduation, she plans to attend college and major in the physician assistant field and nursing.

Lanny Frattare will serve as keynote speaker for the ceremony. The former long-time Pittsburgh Pirates broadcaster joined the Waynesburg University Communication Department in 2009 as the Assistant Professor of Communication.

His main teaching duties include sportscasting, news announcing, and public speaking courses.

He also works with the student sportscasters for the Waynesburg University Sports Network.

Prior to coming to Waynesburg University, Frattare established himself as one of the most recognizable personalities and voices in Pittsburgh and major league baseball as he spent 33 years as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates broadcast team. His stay with the Pirates is the longest of any play-by-play announcer in team history.

Frattare has used his platform as a celebrity to help others. For 23 years, Frattare has been a part of the Family Links Golf Classic, which has raised in excess of 1.8 million dollars for over 32,000 children, families and mentally challenged individuals that are helped out by Family Links.
