West Nile virus found in mosquitoes

By For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Mosquitoes recently trapped in Morgan Township tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

?DEP staff collected the positive sample May 17 at Reesman’s Mobile Home Park near Jefferson, and the sample was analyzed by a state lab. Currently, the DEP is re-sampling the area to further evaluate what procedures should be taken.

Of the 16 samples of mosquitoes collected in the county, 10 were tested and one sample tested positive for the virus.

County and state health and environmental officials said residents should try to avoid mosquito bites by wearing proper clothing when working outside for extended periods of time and by using mosquito repellent containing DEET. Windows and doors should have screens in good condition.

Residents also are advised not to create a breeding habitat by draining or disposing of anything that can hold water outside such as car tires.

Roof gutters should be cleared of clogs, plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows should be turned over when not in use, water should not be allowed to stagnate in birdbaths, water gardens, swimming pools or ornamental pools.

The state’s West Nile Virus Control Program is a multi-agency effort among the Departments of Environmental Protection, Health and Agriculture.
