Dale M. Hockenberry
Dale M. Hockenberry, 95, of Nemacolin, went to be with his Lord at 9:35 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.
He was born October 16, 1915, in Graceton, Indiana County, a son of the late John Clyde and Edna Grace Clawson Hockenberry.
Mr. Hockenberry and his family moved to Nemacolin in 1928. He graduated in 1934 from Cumberland Township High School.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and worked at Nemacolin Mine until his retirement in 1979.
Mr. Hockenberry was actively involved in the formation and the building of the former Nemacolin Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He continued his membership in Greene Valley Presbyterian Church in Carmichaels, where he also served as an elder.
Mr. Hockenberry volunteered as a scoutmaster in Nemacolin for several years and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan. He was honored as Granger of the Year of Carmichaels Grange 1389 and was a member and “official joke teller” of Carmichaels Lions Club. Mr. Hockenberry was honored as Lion of the Year in 2004.
He enjoyed history and photography and wrote a fictional historical play centered in Southwestern Pennsylvania during the late 1700s.
On January 20, 1946, he married the former Sue Carolyn Newsome of Cordele, Ga. The couple celebrated 65 years of marriage this year. For the past two years, the couple resided together in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home.
Mr. Hockenberry will be remembered mostly for his love for and devotion to his family.
Surviving are a son, David J. Hockenberry and wife Jean of Carmichaels; two daughters, Marian C. Fieldor of Carmichaels and Susan G. Brioli and husband Richard of Masontown; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a cousin; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a brother, John C. Hockenberry Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy Capuzzi.
