Nick Clarke had a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning and then stranded the tying run on second base in the bottom of the inning, leading Carmichaels to a 5-4 non-section victory Tuesday at Brownsville.

?The Falcons led 3-0 after three innings, but Carmichaels cut into the deficit with a single run in the top of the fourth.

The teams didn’t score again until the game-winning rally in the top of the seventh inning. With the Mikes trailing 3-2, Clarke smacked a two-run home run for a 4-3 lead. The Mikes added one more run for a 5-3 lead.

Brownsville wasn’t done, as Phil Gnus hit a one-out double. After a walk, a passed ball and errant throw allowed Gnus to score. Clarke, though, stifled the rally to preserve the win. Clarke pitched the last three innings, allowing the one run with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Mikes’ Seth Krall had two hits, including an RBI double in the seventh. Clark had two hits, as did Josh Mundell.

Zach Hibbs, Joe Sczypta and Adam Camey all doubled for the Falcons. Hibbs took the loss, pitching the last three innings.

Beth-Center 2, Waynesburg 1 – Austin Smith scored a game-winning double in the bottom of sixth inning to propel the Bulldogs to their second win of the season.

The Raiders (0-1) opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning.

Bryan Jones earned the win for the Bulldogs who tied the game in the second inning.

The Bulldogs enjoyed a 4-2 advantage in hits.

Clay-Battelle (W. Va.) 10, West Greene 9 – With runners on second and third base in the seventh inning, the Pioneers couldn’t get a much needed hit and bowed out of a close non-section game.

The Pioneers (0-3) rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the first inning with five runs highlighted by a Cory Watson two-run home run.

Watson also pitched five strikeouts and a walk.

Avella 12, Jefferson-Morgan 1 – The bottom fell out for the Rockets in the top of the fifth inning as the Eagles sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on their way to a non-section victory called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Leading 3-1 after four innings, Avella used three Jefferson-Morgan errors to put the game out of reach. The Rockets allowed 10 unearned runs with five errors.

Matt Richards went the distance for the win, scattering two hits while striking out seven and walking two. He also doubled. Jed Fernbaugh also doubled for the Eagles.

Jefferson-Morgan, 4, Clay-Battelle 3 – Brandon Kozich not only started the game, but came on in relief of Tyler Bowman, who relieved Kozich, to earn the victory as Jefferson-Morgan pulled out a wild 4-3 non-section victory over visiting Clay-Battelle (W.Va.).

Kozich pitched the first two innings, allowing no runs. Bowman then came on to pitch with Kozich moving behind the plate. Bowman pitched the next 4.2 innings, allowing three runs while striking out 12 and walking four.

The CeeBees tied the game with Bowman pitching in the seventh. The visitors had runners on first and second with two outs, but an infield error kept the inning alive.

Kozich picked up the final out, but not before Clay-Battelle tied the game.

Kozich struck out six and walked one.

Freshman Logan Bowman stroked a one-out single to start the game-winning rally in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Dicks and Brandon Faieta walked to load the bases, and Kozich singled Bowman home with the winning run.

Bobby Newhouse spotted the Rockets to a 3-0 lead with a two-run single in the fourth innning and an RBI single in the sixth.

Bentworth 21, West Greene 6 – The Bearcats scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to invoke the 3-inning, 15-run rule for a non-section victory over the Pioneers.

Bentworth belted out six doubles, two by Adam Bell and one each by Nick Smydo, winning pitcher Derek Kissel, Matt Vickless and Ian Malone.

Gavin Shuman provided the offense for West Greene with two doubles, a triple, a single and four RBIs.

Softball

Jefferson-Morgan 8, Beth-Center 3 – Tia Sullenbarger singled to break open a tied game for the Lady Rockets in the bottom of the third inning, as they defeated Beth-Center.

Sullenbarger drove in Brianna Yackmack and Chelsea Dean to give the Lady Rockets (1-0) a 3-1 lead.

Kaitlyn Coles earned the win with seven strikeouts and contributed on offense with a double and three RBIs. Tanya White also added a double for the Lady Rockets, while Kristen Stoneking contributed two hits and three RBIs.

Christina Esmond tallied four strikeouts and four walks for the Lady Bulldogs.

Esmond and Tori Kuntz each had doubles as well.

The Lady Rockets enjoyed a 10-5 advantage in hits.

Charleroi 2, Mapletown 1 – Haliey Sapko hit a double and scored on an error in the fifth inning to help the Lady Cougars slip past the Lady Maples.

Anjie Pilghman recorded five strikeouts and three walks for the Lady Cougars.

Felecia Burns threw seven strikeouts and a pair of walks for the Lady Maples, while Wendy Dickerson smacked a triple.

Bentworth 3, West Greene 2 – The Lady Pioneers enjoyed a 2-0 lead until the top of the seventh inning.

Katie DeHosse scored Natalie Hudak to put the Lady Bearcats on the board, while Carey Wood drove in two runners with a double for the go ahead score.

Darcy Bostich walked away with the win collecting eight strikeouts and eight walks.

Paige Moninger recorded nine strikeouts and a walk for the Lady Pioneers (1-1).

Courtney Eddy and Kayla Cooke had doubles.

McGuffey 6, Waynesburg Central 3 – The Lady Highlanders scored two runs in each of the top of the third, fourth and seventh innings, and Cassie Weiss held the Lady Raiders to single runs in the first, third and sixth innings for a non-section road victory.

Breanna Morris tripled for Waynesburg, and Emily Snee went 2-for-2. Jordan Moore (0-2) took the loss, striking out four and walking two.

West Greene 9, Avella 4 – Paige Moninger earned the win and led the offense with four hits to lead the Lady Pioneers to a non-section victory over the Lady Eagles in the season opener for both teams.

Moninger went the distance to earn the win, allowing eight hits while striking out 11 and walking two. She had two doubles, two singles and drove in three runs, including a two-run double in West Greene’s 6-run second inning.

Amanda Temple had two doubles and three RBIs for Avella.

Mapletown 12, Monessen 0 (5 innings) – Felicia Burns starred from the circle and the plate as Mapletown started its season with a non-section win at Monessen.

Burns led the Lady Maples with a one-hitter, allowing two walks and striking out nine in five innings of work. Burns also hit 4-for-4 on the day, scoring four runs as well.

Wendy Dickerson hit 3-for-4 with four RBI for Mapletown.

Amber Malabie took the loss for Monessen, walking two and fanning six batters.
