The Greene County Career and Technology Center’s Practical Nursing Program recently received funding from the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The Foundation has awarded the program grant money for the purchase of Nurse Duffels this year. The duffel bags contain all the supplies that are needed for the students to practice their skills in the skills lab. This year a pocket pulse oximeter has been added to the duffel.

Last year, the foundation purchased “Nurse Anne,” a simulation mannequin; the Nurse Duffels; and a Chester Chest model for central line dressing practice.

Also, to help the students stay current with updated reference sources, the students will be purchasing I-Pods and software for clinical this year.

The software will replace four textbooks purchased in the past.

The program, which began its first class in 1970, has graduated 1,065 practical nurses, including the Class of 2011’s 22 graduates.

The Greene County PN program is accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Admission process begins with a pre-entrance test.

This is a one-year program and it is accelerated, approximately 50 percent theoretical instruction and 50 percent clinical experiences.

The curriculum is divided into three levels and builds from simple to complex. Each level is a prerequisite for the next level. On completion, the students are eligible to take the national test for licensure.

Clinical sites are Southwest Regional Medical Center, Rolling Meadows Long Term/Rehab Care Center and Washington Hospital; and this year, the program is also utilizing Golden Living Center in Waynesburg.

Financial assistance is available for qualified applicants through Federal Financial Aid (PELL), Federal Direct Lending, Southwest Training, Veteran’s Administration, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Training Readjustment Act.

The program boasts an excellent NCLEX-PN (state board) pass rate.
