DeWeese bids farewell prior to sentencing

1 min read

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — State Rep. Bill DeWeese says he’ll remember the friendships he made during nearly four decades serving in the chamber.

DeWeese, D-Waynesburg, made a farewell speech on the House floor Tuesday, three weeks before he’s scheduled to be sentenced in a public corruption case.

DeWeese said he’s a lot more humble than he used to be and calls the House of Representatives “a magnificent institution.”

A jury convicted DeWeese in February of three counts of theft and one count each of conspiracy and conflict of interest. Prosecutors argued he used legislative employees and other public resources for political campaign work.

DeWeese is unopposed in the April 24 primary for the Democratic nomination for another term. That’s the same day as his sentencing.
