Raiders earn 8-5 road win over McGuffey
Alex Swauger drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning and Joe Monica made the lead stand in the bottom of the seventh to lead Waynesburg Central to an 8-5 non-section win at McGuffey.
After the Highlanders tied the game with three runs in the bottom fourth inning, Swauger came through with his RBI single with two outs in the sixth.
The Raiders added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Steven McCaw was perfect in the bottom of the fifth, striking out all three batters, to earn the victory. Monica earned his first save. Swauger went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Graham led McGuffey with a double, two singles and three runs batted in.
West Greene 15, Hundred (W.Va.) 0, 4 innings — Donnie White struck out all 12 batters he faced and swatted a 3-run home run in the first inning to lead the Pioneers to a non-section road victory.
White allowed a single in the first inning and walked four in the game called due to the 15-run mercy rule. He also singled and finished with five RBI.
Matt Johnston went 2-for-3, including a double and drove in three for the Pioneers.
High school softball
Avella 21, Mapletown 4, 3 innings — The Lady Eagles put the non-section game away with 13 runs in the bottom of the third inning, invoking the 15-run mercy rule.
The Lady Maples led 3-0 in the top of the first inning after Andrya Durr smacked a 3-run home run.
Avella tied the game in the bottom of the inning, and moved into the lead with five runs in the second, including Courtney Kerr’s 2-run home run.
Abby Dobbin swatted a 3-run home run in the big third inning.
Lauren Adams (1-5) struck out two and walked 10. Cathy Barber doubled for the Lady Maples (1-5).
Kira Doaks doubled for Avella, and Sunny Liggett and Makalee Petro both tripled.
West Greene 25, Hundred (W.Va.) 7, 3 innings — The Lady Pioneers piled up 23 runs in the top of the first inning on their way to a non-section victory at Hundred.
West Greene added two runs in the top of the third. Hundred scored five in the first and two in the second.
Jordan Rush won her first game of the season, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking six.
The Lady Pioneers’ Paige Moninger had a triple for the lone extra-base hit. Megan Reeves went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Autumn Widdup and Rush both were 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Carmichaels 14, California 1 — The Lady Mikes legged out five triples on their way to a Section 2-A victory at home over California.
Carmichaels’ Morgan Berardi, Cameron Grimes, Regina Menhart, Amanda Brown and Caroline Cree each had one of the five triples, while teammate Megan Bayles had a home run.
Clay-Battelle 12, Mapletown 4 — Clay-Battelle’s Nicole Hartley struck out seven and earned the only extra-base hit, leading her team to a non-section victory over visiting Mapletown.
Hartley had a home run for Clay-Battelle.
Girls track & field
Waynesburg Central 115, Brownsville 35 — The Lady Raiders finished first in all but three events for a convincing Section 6-AA victory over the visiting Lady Falcons.
Waynesburg’s Peyton Hampson showed versatility on the track, winning the 200 (28.26) and 400 (1:02.11).
Teammates Ally Younken (1,600, 6:21; 3,200, 13:37), Niki Augustine (long jump, 14-3; triple jump, 30-10), and Emily Phillips (shot put, discus) also finished first in two individual events. Marissa Kalsey (pole vault, 10-0), Richelle Tharp (javelin, 113-10), Danielle Jacobs (800, 2:45.93), and Skylar Braga (100, 13.27) won their individual events.
The Lady Raiders swept the relays.
The Lady Falcons’ Jenna Shumar remained undefeated in the 100 high hurdles, winning in 18.18 seconds. Whitney Ptak finished first in the 300 intermediate hurdles (53.05) and high jump (4-6).
Charleroi 85, West Greene 62; Frazier 69, West Greene 69 — The Lady Pioneers had a tough time.
West Greene’s Mikayla Sonneborn and Emily Courtwright were responsible for four first place wins, Sonneborn in the 800 (2:37), and Courtwright in the 300 intermediate hurdles (56.6).
Boys track & field
Waynesburg Central 89, Brownsville 60 — The Falcons had their share of first-place finishes, but the Raiders were too deep for a Section 6-AA home victory.
Waynesburg’s Mike Thomas swept the hurdles, and Cameron Jacobs (800, 2:15.55; 1,600, 5:02) and Sean Hilverding (3,200, 12:12) controlled the distance first-place finishes. Ryan Cole won the pole vault and cleared 5-6 to finish first in the high jump. Allen Frye won the 400 in 56.73 seconds.
Tevan McDowell won 2-of-3 throwing events, finishing first in the shot put (40-11) and discus (119-1). The Raiders won the 3,200 and 1,600 relays.
The Falcons’ Matt Karol won the long jump (19-6) and Brandon Myrga took the triple jump (38-1). Ryan Trump won the javelin (116-0), and Tyler Brumley finished first in the 200 (25.52). Byron Mayers won the 100 (11.21), and the Falcons quartet of Karol, Myrga, Brumley and Mayers finished first in the 400 relay (48.52).
Charleroi 115, West Greene 31 — Charleroi finished first in all but two events for a convincing Section 6-AA victory over the visiting Pioneers.
West Greene’s 1600 relay team (Wilson, McCartney, Bowman, Courtwirght) earned a first place spot with a time of 4:06, while Bray Jackson earned the other first place for West Greene in the javelin (96-6).
Frazier 94, West Greene 33 — Frazier earned all but three victories against West Greene at Charleroi.
The Commodores’ Layhear took the win in both the discus (117-9) and the shot put (36-4).
College baseball
Waynesburg 1, Kenyon (Ohio) 0; Kenyon 13, Waynesburg 3 — The Yellow Jackets split the non-conference doubleheader at home with Rob Baumgartel’s performance on the mound the difference in the first game.
Baumgartel kept Kenyon at bay through seven innings on four hits, and the offense came through in the bottom of the seventh inning on Adam Horning’s game-winning single.
Brendan Scoscia had a double and Nick Berdine finished with a pair of singles.
Waynesburg fell behind early in the nightcap and wasn’t able to recover.
Berdine hit a solo home run, his first of the season.
Men’s tennis
Bethany (W.Va.) 6, Waynesburg 3 — The Yellow Jackets won two singles matches and a doubles match, but the Bison controlled the remaining matches to end Waynesburg’s two-match winning streak.
Jon Anderson defeated Jared Roque, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 singles, and Jason Logan beat Tyler Rhoades, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. The No. 2 doubles pair of Peter Mally and Jon Anderson defeated Rhoades and Roque, 8-5.
