Plenty to do at Waynesburg U

…You know, one of the biggest responsibilities of my job as Messenger editor is to sort through a ton of emails that I receive each day, a task that can admittedly take me hours to complete. But though the process may be time consuming, I cannot stress enough how important most of these emails are for the Messenger each week. We pride ourselves on being a community newspaper, so we are always very grateful for the fact that there are many, many community folks who take the time to send us their information so that we can share it with our readers.

It is very rewarding to open up my inbox and see school news, announcements about weddings and birthdays, news releases shining spotlights on local residents who are doing good things to help those in need, and information about upcoming events that would be of interest to all different types of people.

It especially makes me feel good to receive these emails, because I know I have spent (and probably will continue to spend) a lot of space in this column whining about how we would love for everyone to share their news with us. And now, with spring finally here, we know that there are going to be a lot of fairs, festivals and events in our communities coming soon…and we hope that as those events arrive the organizers continue to take the time to keep us informed about them, so that we can keep our readers informed about them as well.

Having said all of that, I want to personally thank everyone who keeps us informed, who takes the time out of their busy schedules to send us an email, drop us a line, call us or even stop in the office so they can give us their community news…those who continuously do this trust us to help them get the word out about their event, and it helps us in our never-ending quest to be the best messenger of Greene County news and events.

For example, I want to give “Two Greene Thumbs Up” to Waynesburg University – and in particular, their Office of University Relations – for keeping us informed constantly about its many community events that are held on campus. I am even more impressed that they have so many events that offer such a wide array of information, education and entertainment.

From art exhibits and theater productions to special guest speakers and informative lectures, the university does a heck of a job providing events that people of all ages and all walks of life can attend. In fact, over the next month alone there will be a number of interesting events at the university, such as:

n The university will host a Spring Overnight Visitation for high school seniors Sunday, March 18, through Monday, March 19. The visitation gives prospective students the opportunity to experience student life while interacting with university students.

Upon arriving at Waynesburg University, prospective students will be paired with a current student who will serve as an overnight host. Participants will experience life in residence halls, academic programs, student life and campus facilities.

For more information, contact the Office of Admissions at 800-225-7393.

n On Thursday, March 22, The Waynesburg University Music Program will offer its final Chamber Works Concert of the semester at noon. The event will be held in the Marsh Center in Roberts Chapel. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.

The concert will feature Waynesburg University student ensembles, including percussion, piano, strings, woodwind, jazz combos and the beauty and barber shop quartets. The concert is expected to last one hour, and refreshments will be served. Audience members are invited to bring their lunch.

For more information, contact Ronda DePriest, assistant professor of instrumental music and director of the university’s Music Program, at 724-852-3420.

n The Waynesburg University Department of Criminal Justice Administration and the Office of Admissions will host its spring Mock Crime Scene Workshop Saturday, March 24.

The event provides high school students the opportunity to work with Waynesburg University students and faculty, as well as experts in the field, to analyze crime scenes and collect and process evidence. A variety of workshops will be offered and will allow students to determine if a criminal justice or forensic science major is for them.

According to Michael Cipoletti, assistant professor of forensic science, students will attend workshops including latent print development, forensic biology and general crime scene processing. Professionals from surrounding counties will conduct the sessions. The final event allows students to apply the principles and techniques learned to a challenging crime scene.

Current Waynesburg University students will also participate at the event. Criminal justice and forensic science majors will serve as team leaders, role players and workshop assistances.

To register, or for more information, contact the Office of Admissions at 800-225-7393.

n On Saturday, April 14, the university will host the Gross National Product’s (GNP) concert. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Goodwin Performing Arts Center. Admission is free, and doors open at 7 p.m. The concert is a spring musical reunion for GNP who started putting on shows at Waynesburg University in 1970.

The reunion then branched out to include other musical talents in the region.

GNP was formed in the mid-1960s in New Jersey. Original band members who will perform together April 14 include Bill Molzon, director of TV operations at Waynesburg University, Scott Buttfield, Linc Davis, Tom Minson and Jeannie Fisher.

For more information or directions to the Goodwin Performing Arts Center, call 724-852-3270.

These are just a few events that have been announced. Be sure to keep checking the Messenger for information and details about these and other events scheduled at the university.

Once again, hats off to the university relations office and to everyone else who let us know about their events. Please keep the news coming…
