Waynesburg University students will have two opportunities to serve with The Pittsburgh Project, an inner-city housing ministry located on the North Side of Pittsburgh, Pa., this semester. Dave Calvario, dean of students and director of the Center for Service Leadership, will lead two trips Saturday, Oct. 6, and Friday, Nov. 2, through Sunday, Nov. 4.

Erin Kern, a sophomore psychology major from Friedens, Pa., spent a week with The Pittsburgh Project through a mission service trip last spring. She enjoyed serving there so much that she plans to return many times this semester.

“I enjoy serving at The Pittsburgh Project because I love serving others and seeing their faces when the projects are finished,” Kern said. “I also enjoyed getting to know the homeowners and hearing their stories.”

For several years, Waynesburg University has worked to build a partnership with The Pittsburgh Project, a nonprofit community development organization committed to meeting the needs of the Pittsburgh community. Each semester, Waynesburg students are given the opportunity to serve extensively with The Project in programs such as tutoring, work camps and community garden.

“In order to care for and re-develop a community, a holistic approach must be taken. We must listen to those living in the community and empower them to solve their problems,” Calvario said. “The Pittsburgh Project has been doing this for over 27 years and it provides a learning opportunity for our students to be exposed to a holistic model of community development that works.”
