Floretta Chambers, volleyball
Carmichaels High School’s female representative for the 2012 Fall Sports “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” is senior Floretta Chambers.
Chambers is a member of the Lady Mikes’ volleyball team.
Chambers, who plays the libero position, was part of Carmichaels’ first-ever WPIAL playoff volleyball team (third-place finish in Section 5-A and a 13-6 overall record).
“It meant a lot to be a part of the first team to reach the playoffs for volleyball,” Chambers said. “It was a wonderful feeling to accomplish that and it’s something that will be with me for a long time. I hope that we will start a strong volleyball legacy here at Carmichaels.”
Chambers’ most memorable sports moment at Carmichaels was in the 2011 season when the Lady Mikes defeated perennial playoff team, Geibel Catholic. With the win, the Lady Mikes clinched a spot in the WPIAL playoffs.
“Floretta has great composure, both on and off the court,” Lady Mikes volleyball coach Ashley Shoemaker said. “She is a dedicated student and is a team player both in and out of the classroom. She always wants feedback and she always wants to improve and be competitive in everything she does.”
Off the court, Chambers has a GPA of 4.0 and will be furthering her education at Duquesne University, studying elementary education and continuing onto law school.
Her favorite class and teacher at Carmichaels are math and Mrs. Kolencik.
Chambers looks up to three-time Olympian Misty May-Treanor as her professional athlete she most admired and her coach as her greatest influence as an athlete.
“Misty has been a big influence on me,” Chambers said. “Beach volleyball is so much more difficult than regular volleyball and it takes a lot of effort and communication with your partner to be good at it. I respect her dedication and positive attitude for the sport.”
Time management is something Chambers offers as advice to young student/athletes.
“You have to take advantage of all the time you get,” Chambers said. “Free time is precious and you can’t drag your feet. If you have time before a practice or a game, you have to work on school stuff and keep after it.”
The “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” is designed to recognize the top male and female student-athlete per high school sports’ season (fall, winter, sports) for the five Greene County schools. The student-athletes are selected by the respective school.
