Sarah Ferrier has been selected as the female “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” for Mapletown High School in the fall sports season.

Ferrier is one of two senior captains on the Lady Maples volleyball team this year.

“Sarah will accept any task given to her,” Mapletown volleyball coach Jennifer Smith said. “And she gives a 100 percent effort, on and off the court. She is a hard-working and driven student, which carries onto the court.”

“She is one of the team’s two captains that were selected by the players this year. Her positive attitude and work ethic will serve her well in all current and future endeavors.”

Not only is Ferrier a tremendous athlete on the volleyball court, but she is a solid student in the classroom with a 4.0 grade-point average.

Future plans for Ferrier include being a pre-med/biology major at West Virginia University next fall.

“WVU was close to home for me and was just a good fit,” Ferrier said. “It wasn’t even one of my top choices at first, but once I took the tour of the campus and knew more about their honors program, I knew it was the right choice for me. Their program is well-recognized and everything about the campus is attractive for any student.”

Ferrier’s advice to other student-athletes is to be dedicated to your work.

“You definitely have to make time to balance both academics and athletics,” Ferrier said. “Our coaches have always given us time before a game or practice to study and do homework and you have to take advantage of that time.”

“At times it is maybe a little stressful, but if you give it your best effort and time, you can be competitive both on the court and in the classroom.”

Ferrier’s most admired pro athlete is Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, and her greatest athletic influence has been the previous seniors that she has played with at Mapletown.

The “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” is designed to recognize the top male and female student-athlete per high school sports season (fall, winter, sports) for the five Greene County schools.

The student/athletes are selected by the respective schools and submitted to the Greene County Messenger.
