A Waynesburg man was killed Monday afternoon when he was struck by a car while changing a tire on Interstate 79 in Amwell Township, Washington County, according to state police.

John Jeffrey Eisiminger, 42, was pronounced dead at Washington Hospital shortly after the crash, police said.

Trooper Zakery Sommers said that the accident occurred at 5:40 p.m. near mile marker 31 when Eisiminger pulled his vehicle onto the shoulder of the northbound lands to change the front, driver’s side tire.

While changing the tire, Sommers said that a 2003 Ford Focus driven by Timothy J. Rodriguez, 43, of Bentleyville struck Eisiminger and then crashed into an embankment.

It was not immediately clear what caused Rodriguez’s vehicle to leave the road.

Coroner Timothy Warco said that Eisiminger died from trauma suffered in the accident.

Rodriguez was flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of a head injury. An update on his condition was not available.

Police said the incident remains under investigation.
