…The Messenger has been a-buzzing with info about the many fall events that are happening in and around Greene County throughout the upcoming autumn season. I mentioned recently in my column that I wanted to encourage folks to let us know about upcoming events, and you have not disappointed. In fact, here’s a reminder about three special events that are happening this coming weekend and throughout the month of September…

…Valley Chapel Methodist Church is celebrating 150 years of worship on Golden Oaks Road in Holbrook. The celebration will include welcoming old and new members on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. with gospel music and an ice cream social at the church. On Sunday, Sept. 8 the church will have Sunday School at 10 a.m., a worship service at 11a.m. at the church, and a picnic right after in the Valley Chapel pavilion. Bring a covered dish; meat and drinks will be provided. RSVP to Carol Peters at 724-499-5557…

…A 9-11 Remembrance and First Responder Recognition will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Rogersville United Methodist Church. The public is invited to attend to show their support for the emergency personnel who serve their communities…

…Flashlight Drags return to the Greene County Airport in Waynesburg on Saturday, Sept. 14. The gate opens at noon, and racing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission is $25 to race and $5 to watch.

Flashlight Drags offers a safe alternative to street racing. The concept is a throwback to the early days of drag racing, where two cars line up for a race and someone blazes a flashlight to signal the start. The format is simple: 1/8-mile race, heads-up format, no brackets and no classes–just for fun. That means racers can race against anyone they want, as often as they want. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, just get back in line and do it again. Some racers have made as many as 20 runs during one event. Whether you’re a racer or a spectator, it’s a family event. For more info, call the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323…

…The 15th annual Greene County Lucas Oil Pulling Expo will be held at the Greene County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Sept. 14. The event will feature Hot Rod Semi’s, Super Stock Trucks, Super Farm Tractors and Super Modified 2WD Trucks. Gates will open at 4 p.m., and the event will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the county’s recreation office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date for this event has been scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. For more info, call 724-627-9160…

…The Heroes 5k Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Greene River Trail, located at the Greene Cove Yacht Club in Millsboro. The Greene River Trail Heroes Run/Walk is being held in memory of the late U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Steven Phillips and U.S. Army Specialist Gregory Cox. The run/walk begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. An entry fee will be required. For more info, call 724-852-5323…

…The 43rd annual Covered Bridge Festival will be held Sept. 21 and 22 at the White Covered Bridge in Garards Fort and the Carmichaels Covered Bridge in Carmichaels. Crafters, Civil War re-enactments, live entertainment, and home cooking are just some of the attractions at these two festivals. The Covered Bridge Festivals should be a great time for people of all ages, so we hope that Greene County residents find the time to attend one or both of the events. For more info, contact Alan and Dorothy Vozel at 724-966-8993 (Carmichaels Bridge) or Cheryl Clark at 724-966-2357 (White Covered Bridge)…

Those who attend this event will enjoy learning about the alpacas and may visit the gift shop where they will find an array of products, including sweaters, socks, hats, scarves, blankets, gloves, bears and much more. Alpaca seminars, hand-spinning demonstrations and a variety of vendors including Thistlethwaite Vineyards will be on site. Children’s activities and hay rides will be available.
