Fall Festivities and Fun
WAYNESBURG – With the end of summer rapidly approaching, Greene County is now looking forward to a busy, event-filled autumn season.
From harvest festivals and Halloween parades to truck pulls and unique fundraisers, there will be no shortage of fun fall events that will offer a wide variety of fun for everyone, young and old alike.
The Messenger is once again proud to present an easy-to-read smorgasbord of the many autumn treats and delights that are being offered throughout the county over the next few months. The information found in this article was provided by the Greene County Tourist Promotion Agency.

SEPTEMBER
n The Lucas Oil Truck Pulling Expo will be held on Sept. 14 at the Greene County Fairgrounds. This event is sponsored by the Greene County Fair Board. For more information, call 724-627-9160.
n The 12th annual 50’s Fest and Car Cruise will be held Sept. 14 in downtown Waynesburg. Come and check out over 300 hot rods, trucks and motorcycles. Step back in time while you enjoy 50’s food, music, activities and competitions. n The 3rd annual Outdoor Heritage Festival wil be held at the Ryerson Station State Park on Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will include camping, fishing, geocaching, trail hiking and walking, historical and interpretive programs for children and adults, nature photography, wildlife monitoring, wildlife watching and birding. n Flashlight Drags return to the Greene County Airport in Waynesburg on Sept. 14. The gate opens at noon, and racing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission is $25 to race and $5 to watch. Flashlight Drags offers a safe alternative to street racing. The concept is a throwback to the early days of drag racing, where two cars line up for a race and someone blazes a flashlight to signal the start. The format is simple: 1/8-mile race, heads-up format, no brackets and no classes–just for fun. That means racers can race against anyone they want, as often as they want. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, just get back in line and do it again. Some racers have made as many as 20 runs during one event. Whether you’re a racer or a spectator, it’s a family event. n The Heroes Run/Walk will be held on Sept. 21 at the Greene River Trail. Attend the Greene River Trail Heroes Run/Walk in memory of the late U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Steven Phillips and U.S. Army Spc. Gregory Cox. The run/walk begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. at the Greene Cove Yacht Club in Millsboro. An entry fee of $20 is required. n The 43rd annual Covered Bridge Festival will be held Sept. 21 and 22 at the White Covered Bridge in Garards Fort and the Carmichaels Covered Bridge in Carmichaels. The festival will feature crafters, Civil War re-enactments, live entertainment, and home cooking. n Lippencott Alpacas in Waynesburg will host a National Alpaca Farm Days/Open House on Saturday, Sept. 28. The event will feature Alpaca seminars, hand-spinning demonstrations and a variety of vendors including Thistlethwaite Vineyards will be on site. Children’s activities and hay rides will be available. The event will happen rain or shine. The farm is located at 265 Meadowbrook Road near the village of Lippencott. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. each day. OCTOBER
n Aviation Day will be held at the Greene County Airport on Oct. 5. Presented by SOAR of Greene County and EAA Chapters 978 and 842, this event features airplane rides, aircraft static displays, food, and lots of other fun activities. Free Young Eagle rides are available for children ages 8-17. Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to sign a consent form in person. Due to EAA rules, parents or guardians are not permitted to accompany Yound Eagles on their flight. A portion of this year’s donations will help to send the C-47, Whiskey 7 back to Normandy for the June 6, 2014 70th anniversary of D-Day. Free admission and parking. n The 6th annual GreeneScene Road Rally, held in memory of B.J. Quallich, will be held Oct. 5 at the National Guard Readiness Center. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Greene County Humane Society. For more info, call 724-627-2040.
n Kids’ AND Ladies’ Day of Fishing (Fall Trout) will be held in Clarksville Oct. 12. Come to the stream site at the Old Chartiers Mine in Clarksville and enjoy some fall trout fishing. The kids’ fishing will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Following this, a free hot dog barbecue will be held, including drinks and snacks for the kids. Prizes will be given to each child participant, along with special awards for contest winners in each age group. The ladies’ fishing will be from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be contests and prizes for the ladies too, including first-, second- and third-place trout catches. This event is sponsored by the Izaak Walton League of America’s Harry Enstrom Chapter of Greene County and the Greene County Commissioners. n The 42nd annual Greene County Historical Society Harvest Festival will be held Oct. 12 and 13 at the Greene County Historical Museum in Waynesburg. Celebrate the harvest season with a host of activities. Area crafters and artisans will be conducting demonstrations and will have items available for purchase. Witness Civil War re-enactors and living history demonstrations. Food and beverages will also be available. n The 33rd annual Keystone Autumn Klassic will be held Oct. 19 at Woodside Farm in Waynesburg. This annual shorthorn cattle show and sale features exhibitors from all over the mid-Atlantic region. n The Mason-Dixon Line 246th Anniversary Hike will be held Oct. 20 at the Mason-Dixon Historical Park in Core, W.Va. A special hike will be held at Mason-Dixon Historical Park, off Buckeye Road, near Route 7 and Core, W.Va. Participants are asked to gather by 10:45 a.m. in the parking lot at the red barn at the park. The hike to the third and last crossing of Dunkard Creek by Mason and Dixon (on the present-day Greene County border) will be led by Pete Zapadka, founder of the Web site exploretheline.com. Zapadka is a journalist, historian and astronomer who will guide participants along the banks of Dunkard Creek to the seldom-visited area at which Mason and Dixon in 1767 were confronted by their Indian companions who said they could not take “one step farther” westward after crossing a war path near the creek and so the survey was halted here in October 1767. n The 5th annual Halloween Spooktacular will be held on Oct. 31. The event, which is hosted by Waynesburg Borough and the Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held on the courthouse steps. n The annual Social Service League Craft Show will be held at the Waynesburg Central Elementary School Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Unique and unusual gift items will fill the cafeteria and gymnasium at Waynesburg Central Elementary School. Come and see local crafters display their talents. Admission and parking are free. Also provided is a well-supervised activity room where children can play while their parents shop. n The Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation Harvest Ball will be held Nov. 2 at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington. Each year, typically on the first Saturday in November, the Foundation holds its major fundraising event at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Over the years, the date may have changed, and occasionally the location has even changed, but one constant is that a great time is had by all who attend. Live music, dancing and great auction items make for quite an enjoyable evening, as well as the opportunity to socialize with people who share the same goals and commitment to Greene County as the Foundation.
