‘50’s Fest and Car Cruise’ to return to downtown Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG – Every fall for the past 11 years, Greene County residents have broken out their poodle skirts and saddle shoes and celebrated another very special decade. And on Sept. 14, this tribute to a simpler time will return once again to downtown Waynesburg.
The 12th annual “50’s Fest & Car Cruise,” sponsored in part by WANB Radio and hosted by Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will showcase the decade’s best, including classic vehicles, clothes, songs and more.
Attendees can check out hundreds of vintage cars, trucks and motorcycles. There will also be contests and activities for children. In addition, many downtown businesses will decorate their storefronts in a ’50’s theme during the event.
In a previous interview, Doug Wilson of WANB Radio said the festival was created in 2001 to bring people to downtown Waynesburg.
“A committee was formed to figure out what could we do to help showcase what we already know is wonderful downtown area,” he said. “The idea of a classic car show was kicked around, and then we thought about incorporating a 50’s theme, and how that would be a unique and special idea. From that, the 50s Fest and Car Cruise was born.”
The festival will feature dance, hula-hoop and bubblegum blowing contests, where attendees can win various prizes throughout the day. There will also be a number of door prizes, as well as goody bags, raffles and giveaways, and many specials to be found at various downtown shops.
Wilson, who is also a deejay and on-air personality for WANB, will be playing ’50’s hits from the Greene County Courthouse, in a special Saturday edition of WANB’s popular oldies’ show, “Greene County Gold.”
Anyone wishing to display a classic vehicle may register upon arrival. There is no registration fee.
