Mia Virgili, softball
Mia Virgili has recently been recognized as the female representative for Carmichaels High School in the “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” program during the spring sports season.
Virgili is a four-year member of the Lady Mikes softball squad and has been the starting centerfielder for Carmichaels the last couple of seasons.
“I have always liked playing centerfield,” Virgili said. “You have to be so active and it’s like the shortstop of the outfield. I use my speed to track down balls and I kind of have the right away to catch the balls that’s in between the outfielders.”
For her biggest improvement on the softball diamond, Virgili stresses her leadership and her team-first attitude has grown.
“It’s always about the team and how we can get better,” she stated. “We are one big family and we have each other’s backs on and off the field. We have been so successful the last couple of years (reached Class A title games the last two years) and we don’t take it for granted. We have had a lot of luck and we have had a lot of skilled players, but I think the reason we were so successful is because we are such a close team.”
Besides being active on the softball diamond, Virgili is also involved in the Senior Standing Committee, National Honor Society, Book Club and Student Council.
Virgili, who has a 3.72 grade-point average, will attend Alderson Broaddus University next fall and will major in pre-dentistry.
“It’s very close to home and it’s such a nice campus,” she said. “I have always wanted to do something in the medical field and my dad is actually a dentist. After job-shadowing him last summer, I have really enjoyed dentistry. My father went to Alderson Broaddus and it was just a perfect fit for me.”
As for any advice Virgili can give to any younger student-athletes, she expressed not overloading yourself.
“You can’t get yourself overwhelmed or fall behind academically,” Virgili said. “You have to do things in a timely manner so that you will have additional time for other school work and your sport. Stay positive and keep your spirits up, and you will be able to succeed.”
The “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” is designed to recognize the top male and female student-athlete per high school sports’ season (fall, winter, spring) for the five Greene County schools.
The student-athletes are selected by the respective schools and submitted to the Greene County Messenger.
