William John ‘Mingo’ Corfont

William John ‘Mingo’ Corfont, 88, of Vestaburg, Pa., died Thursday, April 24, 2014 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 5, 1926, in Brier Hill, Pa., the son of John and Anna Corfont.

Mr. Corfont attended Vestaburg School and was a graduate of Mingo Creek Welding School.

He was Catholic and a member of the Saint Oliver Plunkett Church, Fredericktown, Pa.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Corfont served in the United States Marine Corps. As a Machine Gunner he served in the South Pacific and also participated in the Occupation of Japan.

He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

On May 21, 1946, William was honorably discharged from United States Marine Corps with the rank of Corporal.

Mr. Corfont was employed as a welder for the J&L Vesta Five Mine. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and was active as an organizer for the union. He served as Recording Secretary for UMWA Local Union 762.

He was a past Commander of the American Legion Post 744, Marianna.

Currently he was a member of the American Legion Hanson-Cole Post 391, Fredericktown.

He was also a member of the Owls Club and the Binnstown Low Hill Lions Club.

Mr. Corfont enjoyed baseball. In his youth he was a pitcher for many area baseball teams. As an adult he coached the Marianna Legion Baseball Team. In 1995, he was inducted into the Big Ten Fayette County Baseball Hall of Fame.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Also surviving are his children, William Gary Corfont, Pittsburgh, Pa., Stephanie Ann (Benjamin) Bupka of Clarksville, Pa.; Andrew (Linda ‘Lydia’) Corfont, Waynesburg; four grandchildren, Jarrod Bupka, Audra Bupka, Alyssa Corfont, Rachael Corfont and many nieces and nephews.

The last of his family, he was predeceased by his parents; brothers and sisters, Evelyn Maranto, Robert Corfont, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Sesock, Richard ‘Joe’ Corfont, John ‘Jack’ Corfont and Patty Corfont.

Also deceased is his first wife, Jennie Vincie.

Friends were received Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the FRANK BURKUS FUNERAL HOME, 26 Mill Street, Millsboro, PA 15348 where Blessing Service were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28.

A Funeral Mass followed at 11 a.m. in St. Oliver Plunkett Church, Fredericktown, with the Rev. Father Paul J. Grunebach as Celebrant.

Interment followed in the Greene County Memorial Park.

Military Honors were accorded by the Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391.
