Rohanna has troubles in third round, slips down leaderboard

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Rachel Rohanna had a succinct, to the point response when asked what went wrong in the third round of Stage 3 of LPGA Q School.

“I don’t know,” said Rohanna.

The Waynesburg Central graduate shot a 9-over 81 to move from the top half of the leaderboard to the bottom half with a 3-day total of 8-over 224. Rohanna started the round tied for 36th, but finished the round tied for 119th.

Rohanna posted no birdies in her round. She had four bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey.

She was not quite sure what happened on the Hills course.

“This was the most comfortable I felt all week over the ball,” explained Rohanna. “I had couple penalty shots. That was unfortunate.

“I missed some putts, but, at the same time, I made some nice putts to save par.”

Rohanna was 1-over on her round through eight holes.

“It all started on No. 9. I had a questionable lie in the rough. It was a mud ball. It came out with a weird trajectory,” Rohanna said of the shot that eventually led to a triple bogey.

Rohanna had bogeys on Nos. 10, 13 and 17 going into No. 18.

“I had a penalty on No. 18,” Rohanna said of her double bogey score.

The Hills course wasn’t very forgiving in Friday’s round.

“It’s pretty narrow. Sometimes you can be in the middle of the fairway and not have a shot to the green,” said Rohanna.

“I gave myself a couple opportunities. I really just couldn’t make anything.”

Rohanna said coming into the week the tournament was a marathon, not a sprint, though she will need to pick up some speed if she wants to slip into the low 75 and play in Sunday’s final round.

The low 78 sit at 4-over par going into the fourth round.

“I need to shoot 65 or get ready to come home,” said Rohanna. “The Jones course is the one I’d pick I can go low on. I have to go for birdies or eagles on some of the par-5s.

“If I can … if not, oh well.”

Rohanna is looking to close the long season by advancing to the final round of the final tournament.

“If I got to Sunday, my goal is to put up a good score in the last tournament of the year,” said Rohanna.
