Brownsville girls top Waynesburg Central
HILLER — Brownsville’s lone senior scored 15 points and two of its emerging players combined to score 25 points in a 56-33 Section 4-AAA girls’ basketball win over Waynesburg Central on Thursday.
Senior Whitney Ptak scored 15 points while freshman KeKe MaCrae scored 15 points and sophomore Maris Seto added 10 points for the Lady Falcons. Four of MaCrae’s five field goals were treys.
Brownsville (2-10, 8-11) jumped head 8-0 on a pair of 3-point baskets by MaCrae and a basket by Ptak. After Kerilyn Wilkins scored to break the ice for Waynesburg, Ptak scored the next seven points to go with a basket by Seto as the Lady Falcons led 17-2 and built a 22-4 lead at the quarter break.
Waynesburg Central (0-12, 2-17) trailed 35-12 at halftime but played Brownsville on even terms in the second half, with each team scoring 21 points in the final 16 minutes.
The Lady Raiders put together a 15-1 run in the third quarter led by nine points by Celine Monica as they cut the lead to 41-26.
Monica led WC in scoring with 10 points while Wilkins just missed double figures by scoring nine points.
Brownsville coach Greg Golembiewski hopes to use the win and a challenging season-ending game at Albert Gallatin tonight as springboards for next season.
“We’re always an unselfish team,” Golembieski said. “I tell the team if they have the shot to take it, and we rotate the offense to try to get everybody a turn to shoot the ball. You always want to win and we played Albert Gallatin here (Wednesday). They played us tough and I hope we can play as well tomorrow night at their place.”
The game was the last of the season for Waynesburg Central, and coach John Van Meter said he told his team at halftime, “That was not our best effort. But people remember how you start and how you finish. You have three choices. You can give in, you can give up, or you can give your best. We had a respectful showing in the second half.”
Like Brownsville, the Lady Raiders are relatively young and started four underclassmen on Thursday. “We have to learn that there are four quarters in a game and you have to play well in all four quarters,” Van Meter said.
