Madison Raber, basketball
Madison Raber has recently been selected as the female representative from West Greene High School in the “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” program in the winter season.
Raber is a senior member of the Lady Pioneers basketball squad and has also been involved on the volleyball and softball teams during her high school career.
The 5-9 forward has averaged around 15.5 points a game this season and is one of the leaders on her team in rebounds and assists.
“I think I have improved my game every year,” Raber said. “You can never be totally satisfied with your play and you always have to tweak your game a little every season. I have gotten plenty of experience at the varsity level and in a lot of different summer leagues.
“I’m really thankful for all of the support I get from my family and my team. I have no idea where I would be if it wasn’t for them. I’m truly thankful for the support and it really means a lot to me. All of my teammates have been great and we are like a family on the court as well.”
Raber, who was 16 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau in her career heading into Thursday’s game against Jefferson-Morgan, said that this season it’s all about the team and fulfilling team goals.
“Getting 1,000 points in my career would be great, but I’m more focused on the team,” Raber expressed. “We are looking to make it back to the playoffs again and maybe even take a run at the section title. There are a lot of competitive teams in the section and its going to be tough.”
Through Wednesday, West Greene has posted a 11-7 overall record and are 4-4 in Section 3-A.
Raber has been an integral part of the Lady Pioneers’ success on the court the last couple of seasons, being the high scorer on teams that not only made the playoffs, but squads that took home preliminary round victories on two different occasions.
Not only is Raber excelling on the hardwood this year, but she also gets high marks in the classroom with a 3.7 grade-point average.
After high school, Raber plans to attend Vanderbilt University to study neonatal nursing.
The “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” is designed to recognize the top male and female student-athlete per high school sports’ season (fall, winter, spring) for the five Greene County schools.
The student-athletes are selected by the respective schools and submitted to the Greene County Messenger.
