Colby Kincell, baseball
Mapletown High School’s Colby Kincell has recently been selected as the male representative in the “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” series during the spring sports’ season.
Kincell is a four-year member of the Maples’ baseball squad and has played shortstop, catcher and pitcher.
Besides the baseball diamond, Kincell displayed his athletic abilities on the football field as a running back and linebacker, as well as weighing in at 132 pounds for the Mapletown wrestling team. He also maintains a 3.4 GPA in the classroom.
“I think I would have to pick wrestling as my favorite out of the three,” Kincell said. “Wrestling is so much more intense. You have to be driven and dedicated to succeed in wrestling.”
As for baseball, Kincell prefers the action behind the plate.
“Catching is so much fun,” he said. “It keeps you on your toes every play and you have to have a different mindset to be a catcher.”
For his biggest improvement on the baseball field, Kincell points to his overall growth as a player.
“I think my whole entire game has improved over the last four seasons,” he stated. “I’m a better hitter and I think I’m more aware of certain things on the field. I understand how to be more disciplined at the plate and sometimes a walk is not a bad thing.”
Mapletown has picked up two non-section wins this year against Geibel Catholic (13-1) on March 27 and Hundred (19-1) on April 21.
Mapletown is also tentatively scheduled to play games against non-section foes Clay-Battelle and Hundred near the final week of the regular season.
“I think we have played a lot better this season than last year,” Kincell said. “We have more kids on our roster and we have a better attitude. We have plenty of experience on our pitching staff and we are playing with more confidence as a team.”
The “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” is designed to recognize the top male and female student-athlete per high school sports’ season (fall, winter, spring) for the five Greene County schools.
The student-athletes are selected by the respective schools and submitted to the Greene County Messenger.
