School districts announce graduation ceremonies
The Greene County Messenger recently obtained information regarding the upcoming ceremonies for students graduating in the Class of 2014 from Carmichaels Area and Jefferson-Morgan High Schools. Next week, the Messenger will preview graduation ceremonies for Mapletown, Waynesburg Central and West Greene high schools, all which will be held on June 6.
Carmichaels Area High School
Commencement for Carmichaels Area High School seniors will begin at 7:15 p.m. on Friday in the high school gymnasium.
The 2014 valedictorian is Douglas Kowalewski and salutatorian is Michelle Frye. Senior class president William “Ty” Cole, will address the class and call roll for 67 graduating seniors.
Kowalewski, a son of Robert and Rita Kowalewski of Carmichaels, is a recipient of an Outstanding Scholar Award, Challenge Program Award for Academic Excellence in community service, STEM, Perfect Attendance and Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizen’s awards. He received the Gettysburg College Abraham Lincoln Scholarship, Greene County Envirothon Scholarship, and MEAEOPP Scholarship through the Upward Bound Program. Among Kowalewski’s school activities, he served as National Honor Society president, school newspaper editor-in-chief, marching band, gifted program, Academic League, debate team, yearbook, Envirothon Team, Chem Club and Upward Bound Program. Among his activities outside of school, Kowalewski served as blood drive coordinator, and is a member of American Legion Post 400 Band and St. Hugh Church. Kowalewski is employed by Fairdale Inn Restaurant. In the fall, he will attend Gettysburg College and major in history.
Frye, a daughter of Victor and Susan Frye of Carmichaels, is the recipient of an academic and theater scholarships from Waynesburg University as well as a Chamber of Commerce scholarship. She won Merit Awards in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in 2013 and 2014 and was named November Girl-of-the-Month by Carmichaels Area Women’s Club. Among her school activities, Frye is a member of the National Honor Society, marching and concert bands, Art Club, Newspaper Crew, and head of recycling crew. Her activities outside of school include voice lessons, anime and “cosplaying.” Frye will attend Waynesburg University in the fall where she plans to dual major in advertising and business with a minor in theater.
Jim Crockard, from the Carmichaels Class of 1987, will serve as the keynote speaker for the Class of 2014 graduation exercise.
Jefferson-Morgan High School
Jefferson-Morgan High School will honor its Class of 2014 during commencement, set for 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Representing the senior class, are valedictorian Duncan Alcorn and salutatorian Kraig Davis.
Alcorn, a son of Charles and Francesca Alcorn of Waynesburg, is a highest honors student and recipient of the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award and a Washington & Jefferson College Howard J. Burnett Presidential Scholarship.
Among his high school activities, Alcorn participated in drama club, Academic Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, and Envirothon.
Outside of school, he serves as a volunteer for the Humane Society of Greene County.
Alcorn will attend Washington & Jefferson College in the fall where he will major in mathematics.
Davis, a son of Richard and Cindy Davis of Rices Landing, is the recipient of the U.S. Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award, STEM Award from The Challenge Program, Keystone Achievement Award, Kormuth Award of Achievement, Leo Club Student of the Month, Tri-County Guidance Counselors Scholarship and Paul Newman’s Own Scholarship.
In school, Davis participated in marching and concert bands, symphonic band at Waynesburg University, County Band, chorus, County Chorus, drama, National Honor Society (president), Foreign Language Club (president) and Student Council (vice president). Outside of school, Davis was active in church food banks and served as a holiday bell ringer for the Salvation Army.
He has donated to the women’s shelter in Waynesburg and the Angel Tree Project, as well as organizing the honor society’s annual school talent show which benefits Meals on Wheels of Greene County.
In the fall, Davis will attend Kenyon College to pursue a degree in modern language.
