Carmichaels Area High School’s Parker Woodring has recently been recognized as the male representative in the Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight program in the high school fall sports season.

Woodring is a senior member of the Mikes’ football squad and has been playing for the last two seasons as a left guard on the offensive line and a defensive tackle/end.

If Woodring had to pick between offense and defense, he would choose the defensive front.

“I really like playing defense over offense,” he stated. “As a d-lineman, you are just more aggressive and more attacking. I really like our defenses and I’m very flexible with what position I can play on the line. As a defensive tackle, I love mixing it up on the inside, but as an end you have a lot more responsibilities on the outside.”

Woodring is also a member of the Carmichaels-Jefferson-Morgan wrestling co-op team and said that being a lineman and a wrestler carry similar traits.

“You have to have a lot of instinct and experience to play both positions,” he said. “I never really thought of it, but both sports are very similar. You have to be hands on and have to have quick feet. You also have to have that aggressive mindset to succeed as well.”

For his most memorable moment, Woodring selected the second half of Carmichaels’ season-opener 30-13 victory against Bentworth this season.

“We were down by one point at halftime and we had to rally the troops in the second half,” Woodring said. “It was up to the defense to set the tone and to get a couple of big plays to switch momentum. I think I had three sacks and forced a fumble. That was a big win for us.”

Woodring, who holds a 3.75 grade-point average in the classroom, plans to attend Penn State or North Carolina State with a focus in electrical or computer engineering.

“Penn State is obviously close to home and I actually have family around N.C. State,” he stated. “Being close to family is very important to me. Computers have always been my thing and I love technology. I think it would be cool to see how all that stuff works and to learn more stuff about that field of study.”

As for advice Woodring could give to younger student-athletes, he points out the importance of homework.

“You have to get your homework done every night and you can’t afford to take a night off,” he said. “Academics are so important and it should always come first. I would tell younger kids to start working hard now and don’t wait until your junior or senior year. Preparation and focus are always important.”

The “Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight” is designed to recognize the top male and female student-athlete per high school sports’ season (fall, winter, spring) for the five Greene County schools.

The student-athletes are selected by the respective schools and submitted to the Greene County Messenger.
