WAYNESBURG — Multiple sources have identified Claribeth De La Cruz as the student who was found dead in her residence hall room at Waynesburg University.

The Greene County Coroner’s Office said De La Cruz, 18, a freshman of Naperville, Illinois, was discovered Sunday within her room at Ray Hall.

The coroner’s said the death appears to be a suspected suicide and foul play was not suspected.

Waynesburg police are investigating.

Robin King, senior vice president for enrollment and university relations, said Monday that the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

The University issued a statement Monday that said an investigation into the cause of death is ongoing and the University will release information as it is made available.

Waynesburg police Chief Rob Toth said an autopsy will take place as is standard procedure in any case of an unattended death. He said the autopsy was conducted Monday in Pittsburgh.

The university’s statement said the school community is “saddened” by the news of a death on campus.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with this student’s family and friends. On behalf of Waynesburg University, we would like to express our deepest sympathies,” the statement said.
