Durham scores 30 but Jackets fall to No. 6 Calvin, 89-70
Waynesburg University’s B.J. Durham poured in 30 pints but it wasn’t enough as the Yellow Jackets fell to sixth-ranked Calvin University, 89-70, at the Great Lakes Challenge on Friday night.
Waynesburg (0-3) trailed by just four, 41-37, at halftime, and a 3-pointer by Durham early in the second half whittled the margin to one. The Yellow Jackets eventually tied it, 43-43, on a rare 3-pointer by Jason Propst, then took the lead a short while later when Durham followed a basket by teammate Kenny Klase with another 3-pointer to make it 48-46.
The Knights (2-0) retook the lead only to have Probst convert a three-point play to put Waynesburg up 51-50.
Calvin responded with a seven-point run, though, to go ahead for good.
Durham hit yet another trey to pull the Yellow Jackets within 57-54. The Knights fired back with a 13-4 burst and pulled away from there.
Durham hit 11 of 17 shots, including six of 10 from 3-point range. Probst contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
Waynesburg was out-rebounded 39-28 overall, but out-worked Calvin on the offensive glass with a 14-9 margin and forced the Knights into 17 turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets continue play in the Great Lakes Challenge on Saturday when they take on Alma at 1 p.m.
