James “Jim” C. Hathaway, 79, of Carmichaels, died Friday, October 3, 2014, following a lengthy illness.

He was born June 14, 1935, in Carmichaels, a son of the late Thomas Jones and Anna Bystry Hathaway. He attended Cumberland Township High School and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Hathaway was owner/operator of J & M Cutter Grinding, near Carmichaels. He contributed greatly to the building of the Greene Valley Church of God.

He considered himself a “Street Preacher.” For more than 40 years, his mission and greatest love was telling everyone about the saving grace of his Lord Jesus Christ. He was a big supporter of Gideon Bible International Ministry, both in the United States and overseas; ministering in India was a highlight.

Mr. Hathaway was a former member of Carmichaels Area School District Board and an enthusiastic supporter of athletic events, especially those that involved his children and grandchildren.

He and his wife opened their home to anyone in need. He never met a stranger, always looking to share his blessings with others. His greatest testimony was the life he lived before others and his greatest accomplishment was his family, whom he cherished and loved unconditionally.

On June 21, 1992, he married Sharon Crockett of Carmichaels, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, the Rev. Jeff Hathaway and his wife Holly of Carmichaels, Luke Hathaway of Atlanta, Ga., and Ben Hathaway of Carmichaels; seven daughters, Jackie Workman and her partner, Tara Kinsell, of Carmichaels, Susan Rivers and her husband Randy of Cumming, Ga., Mary Lynn Gaydos and her husband Mark of Uniontown, Latasha (Bird) Hathaway of Madison, Ala., Tiffany Hathaway and her partner, Curtis Litton, of Nemacolin, Loral Hathaway and Moriah Hathaway, both at home; grandchildren Jeffrey Hathaway, Quincy Hathaway, Sarah Hathaway, Rachael Hathaway, Aaron Workman, Arielle Workman, Alyssa Workman, Zack Kinsell, Jake Kinsell, Jordan Kinsell, Ryan Rivers, Mikayla Rivers, Ethan Rivers, Colson Rivers, Mackenzie Metcalf, Ty Metcalf, Savannah Metcalf, Mark Gaydos Jr., Gage Edwards, Addison Litton and Brayden Litton; a great-granddaughter, Lucy Jae Workman; a brother, Brian Hathaway and his wife Terry of Carmichaels; sister LaVonne Vasquez and her husband P.J. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and several aunts, nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his first wife, Mary Ann Rastoka Hathaway, who died March 20, 1992; a brother, Thomas “Tinker” Hathaway; and sisters, Delores Waggett and Margaret “Margie” Levie.
