Albert J. DeVito

Albert J. DeVito, 98, of Jefferson, died Tuesday, October 7, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington, surrounded by family.

He was born March 4, 1916, in Brownsville, the youngest son of Pellegrino and Rosina Gennerazzo DeVito.

Mr. DeVito attended St. Peter’s Historical Catholic Church and school. As a teenager in the early 1930s, he volunteered his labor for about two years during the restoration of St. Peter’s Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and church choir.

He worked as a lineman for West Penn Power Co. from 1935 to 1950. From 1950 to 1960, he was an electrician at Crucible Mine. In 1961 until 1986, he owned and operated a bakery in Jefferson.

Mr. DeVito served in the U.S.Army from April 1942 to December 1945 during World War II. His European tour took him from Normandy to France, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star for keeping communications open under heavy artillery fire during the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member of St. Marcellus Roman Catholic Church in Jefferson and St. Thomas Roman Catholic Parish in Clarksville, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, church choir and parish council. He was employed briefly in the construction of St. Marcellus Church. He was also a life member of Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 954 in Jefferson.

Mr. DeVito enjoyed gardening, woodworking, reading, walking and sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates.

He was dedicated to the Blessed Mother, prayed the rosary daily and passed away on the day marking the Feast of the Holy Rosary.

On February 17, 1942, he married Pauline Hill of Jefferson, who died June 10, 1983.

Surviving are a son, Frederick W. DeVito and wife Tarry of Stafford, Va.; four daughters, Ann DeVito of Jefferson, who resided with her father, Barbara S. Prah and husband Anthony of Uniontown, Janice C. Sikora and husband Richard of Uniontown and Nancy J. Brown and husband Charles of Stafford; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a niece and several nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are four sisters, Carma Malandro, Pauline Mangini, Albina Sessa and Donnetta Citrone, and four brothers, Michael Dewey and John DeVito and two brothers in infancy.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 1477 Jefferson Road, Jefferson, where a blessing service will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, October 11, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Marcellus Roman Catholic Church, Jefferson, with Father J. Francis Frazer, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township. Graveside military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 954, Jefferson, and the U.S. Army.
