Greene County teams had mixed results last week

It was a mixed bag for the five Greene County teams last week during Week 7 of the high school football season.
Waynesburg Central picked up one of its biggest wins of the 2014 campaign with a 26-21 road victory over Southmoreland.
The Raiders (5-2, 4-2) garnered the contest’s first score when Travis Wilkinson returned the opening kickoff 77 yards to give the visitors an early 6-0 lead.
After a bad snap on a punt by Southmoreland, Waynesburg doubled its lead to 12-0 when tailback Hunter Cenname rumbled for a 20-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
The Scotties trimmed the deficit to 12-7 in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but the Raiders and Cenname responded with a 64-yard scoring run by the senior tailback and a two-point conversion pass to Dom Sarra from Colby Collins to make it 20-7.
Waynesburg fell behind 21-20 in the fourth quarter, but Cenname continued his strong game with what proved to be the game-winner on a 45-yard TD run with 2:08 left in the game.
Cenname came up with one more big play on defense, as he intercepted a pass in the end zone in the final seconds to secure the win.
Cenname rushed for 191 yards on 20 carries with the three scores.
“We’re beat up and have players out of position,” Waynesburg coach Russ Moore said. “Hunter knows he’s the man and he stepped up. Once again we were outsized up front. But, this was our best defensive game.”
Cenname is currently second in the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club race with 114 points, trailing defending champion Beth-Center’s Anthony Welsh (130 points).
Other Greene County names in the top 10 of the scoring race among the 15 area high schools are Waynesburg’s John Glen Davis (4, 71 points), Mapletown’s Dylan Rush (5, 68 points) and Mapletown’s Adam Hein (6, 66 points).
The Raiders will face another critical Interstate Conference showdown tonight with a trip to McGuffey. Currently the Highlanders are 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
The two squads have not met the past four seasons, but McGuffey has won the last six meetings. Waynesburg’s last win against McGuffey was in 2003. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast on greenesports.net.
Mapletown secured its first postseason berth since 2005 with a 40-21 victory over Bentworth in Tri-County South Conference action.
“We got a great group of kids,” Mapletown coach George Messich said. “We finished 5-4 last year and we knew we had a couple of kids coming back in some key places. To be 5-2 right now and clinch a playoff spot is huge for our kids. We battled through a lot of tough years since 2005 and all of the credit goes to the kids and my coaching staff.”
The Maples (5-2, 5-2) compiled over 300 rushing yards and forced four key turnovers in the win.
Running backs Adam Hein and Dylan Rush scored three touchdowns apiece and were catalysts in Mapletown’s rushing attack. Rush carried the ball 35 times for 241 yards, while Hein added 14 carries for 130 yards.
“Both Adam and Matt were great,” Messich said. “They ran hard and they were dragging two or three people with them almost every carry. When you rush for that many yards, it tells you a lot about our offensive line, give some credit to those guys as well.”
Mapletown hosts California tonight in their final TCS game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Greensboro.
These two teams have not met the last two years and the Maples have only been victorious against the Trojans once in the last eight meetings. The last win for Mapletown was in 2005.
Speaking of California, the Trojans upended West Greene last week with a 20-0 setback to the Pioneers.
The win was California’s first of the 2014 season. The Trojans scored a touchdown in the opening 12 minutes of the game and took a 14-0 lead at halftime before adding six points in the third quarter.
The Pioneers (1-6, 1-5) were shut out for the fourth time this season, despite a strong running game from Donovan Weaver (nine rushes for 73 yards).
West Greene welcomes Frazier tonight for the Pioneers’ final home game of the year. First kick will be at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers have dropped the last four meetings to its Fayette County foe and the last victory West Greene has had over Frazier was in 2005.
Carmichaels had their modest two-game winning streak snapped in Week 7 with a 26-0 loss to Frazier.
Frazier collected two touchdowns in the first half on offense and put the game away with two punt return touchdowns in the third quarter.
The Mikes (3-4, 3-3) are still in playoff contention and will need to get a win tonight against Avella on the road. Both teams, along with Jefferson-Morgan and Bentworth, are battling for the final playoff spot in the TCS behind Beth-Center, Frazier and Mapletown.
Carmichaels has won the last two meetings against Avella, a 52-14 triumph in 2012 and a 40-21 victory last year. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on greenesports.net.
Jefferson-Morgan stepped out of the TCS last week and suffered a 38-8 loss to non-conference foe Springdale.
The visitors put up 30 points in the first half and then gathered one more score in the fourth quarter.
J-M avoided the shutout with a 24-yard touchdown run by Colton Davison.
The Rockets (3-3, 3-4) travel to B-C tonight for a conference clash in Fredericktown. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
J-M is just 1-9 versus its Washington County rival over the last decade, but the Rockets are the last Greene County team to defeat B-C (a 19-6 win in 2007).
